primer pump old style frozen..

I'm pretty sure I have an older version, do I need to unscrew it so that I can pump? Should I be able to unscrew it with my hand?

Yes, you should be able to unscrew the white knurled knob. Be sure to screw in back down when you're done.

Better yet, replace it with the newer style, the top one in the pic.

Yes you turn the white part and then pump. Sometimes they are super tight. A gentle squeeze with some channel locks will give you more leverage.

If it splashes fuel out of the pump when you pump it, then it needs to be replaced. I would opt for the newer style. Be advised that there are 2 sizes of the female fitting. The new pump has a threaded collar which can be removed if needed when you install the unit to the fitting.

If I remember correctly you must keep your thumb over the center of the white wheel to pump it back up. Otherwise you get no compression. Does that sound right? Old style.

no...
not right. the center hole is not open to the fuel.

Just turn the knob CCW and pump.

thanks guys! Lets say my old style pump is infact leaking. Any chance I can perform a diesel purge without having to pump it? Thing is, I want to purge this and be done with it before its starts snowing and don't want to wait for the part to come in. Can I fill the filter with atf, crank the injector lines, and try and fire her up? Or does the problem lie within the lines between primary and main filter?

thanks

... for a diesel purge, I would not drain the filter.
I'd get a 2 or more quart bottle, pour the can/s of purge into the bottle and replace the fuel and return lines in the bottle.
then run the car until you are almost out of purge in the bottle, and then put on new filter, and fill it with fresh Diesel, and see if it will start. it'll likely stumble a tad but if you keep your foot in it, it should catch and run fine this way!
