OM617 wont start after rebuild. Sucking in exhaust?
 

Hey Guys,
I just finished rebuilding my 617 turbo out of an 83 300D. It is sucking through the exhaust and will not start. I am wondering if I have it 180 out of time. Any help would be great!

Yeah, my guess is it's out of time.

Yup. 180 degrees out of time but you'll have to rotate the engine crank assembly 360 degrees while keeping the cam at the same place to correct it.

Hey Joe, how'd you know it was sucking through the exhaust? Maybe this is my issue. We never marked anything before we took the engine apart initially so we just did our best to get the timing realigned from head to block. Cranked it over 10 times and it was all lined up all 10 times.

Joe let me know how it runs, assuming your using any of my old parts.

Rotating the crank 360* will leave you exactly where you started. You want to rotate it 180*, assuming that's the problem.

Only once the cam timing has been rectified a 360 deg rotation might be necessary to rectify the Injector Pump Timing.
Valve(s) could already be bent.
Be real careful.

Maybe it's semantics but why rotate the crank? Remove and reinstall the cam. Then figure out if the IP has to be phased as well.

Now there is a lot of work in removing and reinstalling the cam. It is a lot less work then rotate engine 180 or 360 degree. It takes 720 degrees or two complete turns of the engine to turn the cam once or 360 degrees. So to get to the other side of the cycle, remove the IP, turn it 360 and reinstall the pump. No, I have never done this, I just "think" it might work.

I'm here out of curiosity, not authority - It sounds like a PITA but as 190d said, how can you turn the crank with the cam in place? The pistons will slam into open valves. Or can you pop out the rockers so all the valves are closed while you turn the crank?

I am not an authority either but are you talking about turning the crank 360 degrees without allowing the cam to move? That will accomplish nothing but a lot of sweat. You are timing the cam to the engine and the engine at top dead center needs the cam in a certain position and moving the engine 360 will not change the relationship to the cam. Now if you moved it something less or more than 360 you have done something but I have always timed the cam to the engine at top dead center on #1 because thats how the cam is marked and the injector also. Thats why I say move the cam which isn't anymore difficult than trying to leave the cam put and move the crank.
