kendall or rotella synthetic? mos2 lubromoly??
what do I put in my engine ??!!!
I know Kendall is superb. makes my 617 run so much better. but now people are telling me go synthetic!! and I just bought a bunch of lubro moly mos2 additive!! so confusing, what oil to use... Please refrain from "colorful adjectives" |
I usually use Rotella. Just be sure it is actual Diesel rated oil. The dino oil is usually 15w40.
|
You dont need synthetics. I run them in the winter only for cold starts, otherwise I do beleive it a waste of $$. Rotella is decent base oil as is Delo. I've found DELVAC has the most stable base ( lasts longer). Ironically the most expensive synth, Mobil1, is not any better than the rest, but they have folks BELEIVING it is. Good marketers.
The reputation for a million mile car was made on DINO oil. |
Uh-oh, another oil thread.
Okay, okay, I just switched to Rotella T6-5W40 (from Rotella T-15W40), fully synthetic. I've noticed a difference and am now a convert. |
pre86 I use what's on sale, Diesel rated. Post 85 I use Synthetic, on sale...
|
LubroMoly 5w40 is what I use in everything.
|
Answer
I use 0W40 or 5W40 synthetic for cold weather starting.
You are in SO CAL = you can use most diesel rated oil, unless you plan ski trips to COLD areas, then use 0W40 or 5W40 diesel rated synthetic. . |

I have been on Mercedes lists/groups since 1994 and cannot recall anyone knowledgeable using Kendall in a diesel. Ever. Listen to the recommendations of others and stick to Rotella, in your choice of dino or man-made/modified.... :D |
I love oil threads!
I just purchase whatever is on sale. I use syn in the winter and usually dino in the summer. Sometimes I use syn all season. Just depends how I feel, sometimes I drink some. |

We use the oil that we get for our cat scraper. I think its 10w40 dino. It goes in just about everything including brothers C280 & moms 190E & all the diesels. About the only thing its not used for is 2 stroke mix for the chainsaw. Getting it in 50us gal drums makes it cheap. Dont know who makes it, dont really care!! Oils is oils, there is way too much marketing hype about them !!! You are welcome to your over marketed consumer products. The average joe's car is not worked hard enough to warrant some wizz bang stuff !! A scraper spends about 1/4 of its life WOT full power on the point of transmission stall. You can watch the EGT & engine/trans oil temps head for the red when ever you load in hard ground. When you have those conditions in your car, then you need to really worry about oil performance !! Just get yourself a properly diesel rated oil. |
