There are places that sell metric plastic gears for a couple of dollars. Those on the SD were too far gone to figure the specs. 85 SD and 89 gasser (forgot model) appear the same. From memory wer need diameter, tooth count & thickness measured in MM. I'm too cheap to pay $30 for $2 pice of plastic but am getting tired of no odometer.

I used them and was very pleased. Their new gears should last for the life of the car.
two notes, the 124's mostly use mechanical cable for the speedo, it's possible some models use electronic, but all of mine are cable driven.
also, the 123's RARELY need gear replacement, simple crimping of the pot metal gear shaft is all that is needed on the 123's (except for the 81TD... it's electronic like the SD/126)

Perhaps we'd better differentiate between speedometer & odometer. 85SD has electric speedometer which is still working at ~240,000 mi. Odometer has plastic gears. I found some that fit in an 89SEC but I also need the small gear & haven't found one.

On other cars I've owned, the mechanism that drives the speedometer is in the differential. Having the speedo measure correctly only requires that the correct pick up or diff drive gear be maintained.

Does anyone know where an 85SD gets it's speed signal? Perhaps the entire speedometer can be swapped.

Believe it or not.

I was afraid I would break something by crushing the brass sleeve that remained when the little wheel crumbled. I had a utility knife with a hook blade. The sharp side of the hook went in between the brass sleeve and the plastic housing it comes out of. The shaft protruded slightly from the brass sleeve. I took the needle nose and put one jaw on the hook blade and the other on the end of the shaft. It moved enough to flush the sleeve and the shaft's end.

I then cut a large paper clip about 1/4 to 3/8 inches long and rested the little piece on my finger tip at the end of the shaft. The sleeve had moved enough to get the needle nose between it and the plastic cover that the shaft came through. The other jaw of the needle nose went on the end of the paper clip.

It was a pain in the rump so I immediately ordered the best replacement gears on the market.

I guess it might be the worlds smallest gear puller.

I would love to have a few sets of gears for the 126s. I have a 'friend,' who has twenty of those things that don't work.

Please find the link and I'll put you atop my prayer list.

Instructions from odometergears.com say not to pull the drive gear off as you can damage the motor. Same with putting the new drive gear on, you have to remove the cover off the motor compartment so you can apply back pressure on the shaft when pressing the new gear on.

foolio, I appreciate that.

I put pressure only on the end of the shaft but that won't get the new one on without damaging the motor. I'm presuming you are talking about the magnetic thing attached to the other end of the shaft.

One of the posters here said he used a small socket to press the little wheel back on. Perhaps I missed the part about holding the shaft because he stated it was spring loaded or held magnetically.

Thanks for the information and straightening me out. I will remove the cover and hold the shaft when I put this back together.

Whether or not you got your gears from odometergears.com, you can go to their website and see their instructions. Good luck!
