73 220D vacuum pump installation
 

I am getting ready to install a replacement vacuum pump on my 220D motor. I am installing a used pump with new valves and diaphragm, but while looking at new pumps I found this warning on a vendors pump listing. "Vacuum Pump; Diaphragm Type
The installation guide supplied with the pump must be followed for correct installation procedures in order to be eligible for the manufacturer's warranty. Incorrect installation that results in broken cam follower, unevenly worn roller, or other ancillary damage will not be warrantable. Installation should be done by trained personnel only. " Other than taking up on the ring of mounting bolts gradually and evenly, is the anything else to do? Thanks so much for your input!

The new diaphragm needs to be installed under tension, but if the vacuum pump is complete, there is no special way to install it on the engine. It helps if the cam isn't pushing against the cam follower, so you may have to turn the engine a bit.

Could you explain a little futher about installing the diaphragm under tension? I may have done that incorrectly! Thanks Govert!

Just next to the socket - where I'm undoing the bolt with a ratchet - there's a kind of roller coaster hill and valley-like runway for the rollers on the vacuum pump. If you install the vacuum pump when its rollers are in the valley then you don't have to force the pump housing into position...

The FSM states that you need to install the diaphragm when the arm is in the "up"-position, so screw the diaphragm on the arm, then screw the cover on. And use the correct torque. There is a real danger of the diaphragm tearing otherwise. It is in the FSM under section 43 Brake system.

This is all great information and I thank you both very much. I will install the pump this coming weekend!
