W126 w123 engine swap?

Greetings dieselheads. I just wanted to double check on something. If I wanted to swap an engine from an '83 300D into my '84 300SD everything should work as long as I switch over the engine mount arms and the oil filter housing right?

yes.

Dynamite! Did I mention while I have the engine out a Holset HX30 and an intercooler are going to weasel their way into the SD? (along with my trusty egt and boost gauges.) :D:D:D:D:D:D

Sounds like you got a hold of Larry  I thought the oil filter housing was the same, just the SD has an electronic pickup for the oil pressure gauge.

There is a difference between the W123 and W126 filter housings. they will fit either engine, but there are some slight differences externally.

Even thought the 126 has a electric oil sender and the 123 has a manual pressure gauge, the rear plates will not swap between the 2 housings.

I believe the oil supply hard line to the turbo is different also, maybe a different bend or 2.

The angle of the housing is different also.

This post shows differences between the two.

E holset is here (7 blade, divided turbine housing entry) along with a non egr intake. The intercooler is sitting on my parts shelf. A non egr w116 exhaust manifold is on it's way courtesy of DeliveryValve. I'm heading to Springfield next Saturday to pick up the parts car with the donor engine. Here's a pic of Karl, the incredibly lucky w126 who will receive all these goodies.

I grabbed oil cooler lines from the 126 when I picked the oil filter housing, but I did not pick the turbo line as it was already gone when someone got the intake with the turbo. As it turned out the one from the 123 engine worked fine. There might have been a very slight difference, but none that created any hassle. I think I needed to just tweak it like 1/2" or something like that.

I put a 123 engine in my 126 (when I had it). I recall swapping the oil filter housing because of mechanical vs electrical sender and some other accessories as well just for convenience. I swapped valve covers to line up linkages.

So yes, it can definitely be done.

I find it hard to believe that the cat is one of those Go Fast goodies!

Johnt49 02-11-2012 11:39 AM

Would that be considered a cat back system?
