1987 300D wheel well/fender liner
Due to the recent snow/ice in Seattle, something pulled the driver side front wheel well liner loose and it started to rub on the tire at freeway speeds due to the force of air pushing the plastic (I think) liner backward. This is directly behind the driverside headlight. I got that secured with some additional screws and clips but when I looked on the passenger side I found no corresponding liner. I did not even find any evidence that it was ever there. Does anyone know whether this model only had a liner on one side?

It has one... probably removed by the PO. Per side there are 2 parts each... 1 long, which wraps along the wheel well, and 1 shorter one, the one with the slats, vents... this covers the front part of the wheel well... if installed, prevents mud, splash etc from hitting the inner portion of the bumper. I still have all these on my 300TD, and I DID have them on my 300D.

Thank you for the response
The PO was my late father in law who had numerous accidents. The final repair in 1992 was from his last accident which involved a brick truck and the bill for the repair was $14K. He died from old age not the accident. Apparently the dealer neglected to install the liner. That dealer also skipped the removal of the trap oxidizer although I am not clear when MB issued the rework order.
The absence of a liner on the passenger side might explain why the air intake keeps getting debris in it. Do you happen to know the part number or if it is still available? I tried the fast lane index but could not find it.

Do you mean the part that covers the oil cooler? On the earlier 124 that part of the cover is only on the driver's side; the passenger side has a different design. IIRC.

I do not know availability but I'll check the part number if its there... I have it off at the moment and yes... having it off WILL introduce debris INTO the air filter housing when passing through wet roads.
off-topic, ever wonder what those spherical things jammed up near the passenger door are? (You won't be able to see them with the liner installed.)

I'm going to have to investigate my car now, because I don't remember the passenger side having a cover that goes all the way to the bumper like the bit over the oil cooler ... hope it hasn't been missing something all these years ...

Sorry to say this... but yeah, you're missing that piece. looking in the wheel well you shouldn't be able to see the "insides"... any of it. That includes the bumper's inner skin.
Hmmmm, I don't see where the spherical thing attaches to the expansion tank... I may have missed something. I'll try to trace it.

I definitely could be wrong about the spherical thing, just trying to remember what was back there when I helped take apart a parts car. I know there's a tank in there somewhere. I hope ... at least I'd be right about something ...

Haha, no problem! I'll try to get a pic later today while its off the car, and maybe find that part number.
It may as well be a tank... or what about a charcoal canister thing? I remember having one of those in my 83 TransAm... but charcoal is for gassers right?

Thank you. That photo confims it
I am almost positive that I do not have the skid plate either. I do have the two acoustic covers though.

Thanks locry! Appreciate it! I'll see what the dealer wants for a new one while I'm up there today to get engine mounts; if it's too pricey I'll see if someone's got a used one hanging around. My belly pan has also been off for years, but it's sitting in my garage (my dad just found it in his garage a while back) ... once I get done with the latest round of fixups I'll stick that on too.

The spheres might be the reservoir for the transmission vaccum reservoir. I don't know my MB put it so far away.

Vac reservoir... that makes sense... it looks robust enough to hold vacuum. Good call!
Lemme know if you find one. I know where to get them over here... though shipping will be a little steep I think. I've ordered a bunch of stuff from US forum members and average shipping was 35-50 usd IIRC.
