I just replaced my oil cooler lines last week. My '84 300D has 191,000 miles and the lower oil cooler hose has been weeping for the last 15,000 miles... but steadily getting worse. When I removed the hoses from the cooler, the rubber hose part on the lower hose actually rotated and slid out of the ferrule about a 1/4 of an inch. Clearly, I was within the range of "catastrophic hose failure." I'm the third owner of my 300D and it is a Mid-South USA car (bought in Richmond, VA and spent most of its life in NC). The hoses I removed appeared to be the original equipment.

I had a local hose shop (that also specializes in racing applications) rig up a set of hoses. I plan on doing a post with pics this weekend.

I wouldn't bypass the oil cooler unless there was some emergency that required it... and even then I wouldn't run it bypassed any longer than necessary to get it home (or to a shop) to fix the lines/oil cooler.

I picked up an oil cooler today to test the feasibility of going with AN fittings directly. And it definitely works. Here's a picture showing the possibilities. of a -10 AN fitting on a 300D oil cooler. On the left is a 3/8"NPT to -10 AN fitting to which a 90 degree hose end fitting has been screwed on and on the right is an integral 90 degree fitting. This strategy allows those people with galled threads to go to a replaceable AN hose end with no brazing required on the cooler end and not need to get a new oil cooler.

Screwed Nipples

First time I replaced the oil lines on the 85, was back about 2003. when we bought the car in 97 with 176K, the lower line at the cooler was weeping. never gave it much thought as it was not dripping. did notice the rubber hoses seemed a bit hard.

We were coming back home from a trip to Texas, and stopped in Kingman, Az. I checked the oil before we got going again, and noticed oil dripping from the hose. when we got home, the hose was spraying a bit on the inside of the L/F tire. well we dodged that bullet.

When I got the hoses off, there was a date of 84 stamped on the furrell part. so these were originals.

I don`t recommend driving another 3 - 400 miles with a drippy hose. any wetness on the hose ends, replace them now!!!

There is the Screwed Nipples that can be bought from the dealer to replace a galled oil cooler threads.
oil cooler cross threaded...

how about using plumbing tape on the threading of the oil cooler to prevent seeping?

It is a ball taper face seal, sealing the threads has no effect.
