W126 Leaky Spin-on Fuel Filter

I have a recurring problem I was wondering if others have had, and whether there is a solution. After I replace my spin-on fuel filter, I get a significant amount of diesel spraying onto the area around the first injector. In the past, I've solved the problem somewhat by really tightening the bolt at the top of the filter, but it feels like I'm about to strip the screws (in other words, I am pretty sure it is overtightened by any normal standard). Anyone else have this problem? Thanks for any thoughts

You have diesel spraying from the spin on filter? Something is really not right if this is the case. There should be a crush washer under the bolt the holds the spin on filter to the housing. I'd replace it stat. Also make sure the surface of the filter housing that the bolt seals against isn't all marred up as well as the under side of the bolt head. You might also make sure the return line isn't plugged. The fuel coming out of the return isn't under a lot of pressure, so if you have a clog somewhere it would cause excess pressure causing fuel to spray.

Thumbs up

Do not forget that banjo fitting also has orings that should be replaced pretty much whenever you do fuel filters.

The permanent fix! - 18mmŲ 'Nu-Lip" aluminum bonded washer available from any specialized hydraulic supplies outlet. Clean up the face on the filter mounting bracket before fitting. N.B. Don't over-tighten!

Another way to approch the problem is to go the the Junk Yard and get another Filter Housing with a Central Bolt that uses the 2 O-rings.
2 years ago another Filter Housing costs $5 at the pick and pulls out here in S. CA.

My 84 has the Newer style filter Housing; you might as well pull out your Filter Bolt and see if you have the doulble O-ring one.

Also overtightening has been know to warp the Filter Housing.

If you strpped anything it would most likely be the material in the Spin-on Filter. Either way if Metal particles are in that area that is the area of the Filter where the Fuel is already filtered. Meaning that there is a slight chance any Metal Particles could get into your Fuel Injection Pump.

Look on the top of your fuel filter housing. there will be a long #.
615 092 01 08. that housing uses a longer center bolt, uses one rubber "O" ring, and a metal crush washer under the bolt head.

this post shows the bolt.
Leaks at fuel filter on 617

If your filter housing has the #
615 092 02 08 then you have the shorter bolt, and it uses 2 rubber "O" rings, and no metal crush washer under the head.

this post shows the shorter bolt and the 2 "O" rings.
O rings etc screw on fuel filter

A picture of the #`s I was talking about.
Main fuel filter leaking on top. Am I missing something?

WOW !!!

Charlie --- Thanks for the very informative post. I just pulled the new 02 style fuel filter housing off of the 1991 350SD. My car already has the new 2 oring center bolt --- just changed the fuel filter last night.

Eric --- I had no idea those orings were suppose to be changed on each fuel filter change.

Keep up the good work, guys!!!

Sounds like someone overtightened yours too, a common "gorilla" move with the usual 'fix'.

As mentioned, the seal occurs at the upper of the two "O" rings on the banjo bolt, not at the housing on "02" units.

If you think you need a different "02" housing, let me know.

When we got the 80 240D, I thought I would be smart and swap out the filter housing with the #1 for a #2.

I get it all swapped over, new filter and all primed, and get her running.
then I look at the old one I took off, and the damn thing has a #2.

Some one along the line had changed it already. boy did I feel stupid for not looking first.

SpecialDelivery, definately remove that washer from under the bolt head.

thank you!! I was at the yard today, found a 02 housing and pulled the bolt, which has a smaller head on it (19mm) vs the one in my car (24mm) and in another sitting at the yard. I'm going to to back monday to get both housings and a radiator and a MINT dashboard!

I just removed the washer and snugged down the bolt....going to degrease and see if she leaks...it didnt...but the banjo fitting to the IP and the cigar line did...so I snugged that down too (17mm) and it stopped leaking...next the return line from the filter housing to the first injector...so I replaced that..

LEAKS FIXED!!

One question tho...The filters center banjo bolt has 2 different size O-rings. Fastlane only shows one...how do we get both? Both of mine look kinda flat and I want to change them! What about the other banjo fittings? Are there O-rings in them?

Lucas goin in the tank!

Thanks for your info TooMany and charmalu!!

You're welcome.

The info is tiny, but the epc shows a couple of different numbers.

However, I went the local AutoZoo and picked up a box of various sized "O" rings, one of those fit, works fine.

Or call the folks on the site here.

Not at all, that would be a good idea, but I haven't seen them in viton.

That's the box I bought.

Happy to help.
