Runaway 300cd

Not what you think ,I dropped by a friends house last night to return a chainsaw ,came back out to jump in my car parked on the street and it was gone ,instantly looked down the road to see it parked nicely in a ditch with the lights still on and the frt bumper run aground on a concrete culvert. It pays to fix those rubber washers on the shifter rods .Ive been putting the parking brake on to keep her from rollin once in park ,the only real damage to speak of is the radiator and some bent rad. supports.

Dang, you're luck it didn't run into more.

I have a friend that bought a 115 300D that he found out sometime after he bought it that the PO had parked the car and didn't get it parked correctly and it rolled down a hill and jumped off the end of the road into some sand. I guess the whole car was airborne. Though you couldn't tell anything happened it was a beautiful 115.

Bummer . At least no one was hurt, could have been kids, pedestrians, bicylist in the path or another car. blessing it worked in your favor in that way.

Don`t beat your self up thinking I should have done this or that. Remember, never should on yourself.

I know that sinking feeling of going back to the car, and it is gone. I do that in large parking lots, someone always move it on me.

Mine will allow the engine to be shut off and key removed when still in drive. Not sure if that is a malfunction or that it did not have a safety in 1978. One time it did roll off when in park. I use the e brake just in case.

No malfunction, there's no park ignition lock on your car.

Maybe a warning to all others with this issue ,this is the only time I can remember not putting the e brake on and it happened .The road had such a slight grade that the car probably sat for a few minutes before walking away ,maybe 5 mph on impact ,I do feel grateful no one was around .

This may be the only time you remember not doing it because the car rolled down the hill.
The parking brake in my 82 300TD never worked I always relied on putting it in park to keep it from rolling away.

Always turn the wheels towards the curb when on a hill.
Apply the parking brake, then place it into park.

I always wonder if the Parking Brake is an option when people purchase a new car? Just watch people when they park their car or Pick Up in a Shopping center or Mall. they slam it into Park, jump out and the vehicle is kind of rocking back and fourth. then you know they didn`t use the Brake.

I have seen a few cars roll out of their space after the owner has walked away.

I have seen some Company`s require the driver/operator place wheel blocks under the tires, on the oposite side. this requires the driver/operator to walk around his vehicle to make sure it is clear behind it before backing up.

That would go over big, if the DMV`s in each state made this manditory.
I would want to be the guy selling wheel blocks.

The early automatics had no park position. I positioned the linkage in the park position on one of them and got out. The car started to roll by me.
