Please help! Turbo whine on 300D

Please watch this youtube video. About 5 seconds into video is when it starts. I was revving the engine to get the turbo to spin, once it does it makes that sound. Any ideas?

Mercedes Turbo Whine - YouTube

It does it with the air cleaner on also. It just started this yesterday. About a week ago the turbo whistle became louder (sounded more like exhaust leak) which I thought was due to an exhaust leak. The exhaust is not in good shape so that is why I assumed it was an exhaust leaking cause the turbo to get louder. But this new sound is something I've never heard from a Mercedes diesel (only been around 5 of these old diesels.)

Any help would be great!

Inspect the waste gate hose.

Doesn't sound exhaust related.

I agree this does not. Before this sound the turbo sounded normal but louder so I figured exhaust.

Thanks, I'll check it next break.

Have you checked for lateral play in the shaft?

It doesn't move in and out, just up and down a little.

Its pulling in air around the inlet gasket from the air cleaner would be my guess like others here have said ,tighten the clamp up or get a new or better one.

You can make a boost boot to test for air leaks. Just push the google button a little & lots of info will appear.

It's not the inlet gasket. This is much different.

Edit: ....make a boot, pressurize the system and find out where it is leaking.

What year is the car? If its a newer 300D, it could be the ARV. Try pulling out the vacuum hose to the ARV and see if the the whistle goes away.
