is it the tumbler? or the ignition housing that needs to be replaced?
Hey guys. My 300d's ignition started doing something strange the other day. When driving, especially over potholes and such but sometimes for no reason, the tumbler slips ever so slightly towards the acc position. Battery lightcomes on, kills all the instruments, turn signals, wipers, windows, climate, and for good measure, also squeals the buhjeezus out of one of the belts. When this first happened all i heard was an ominous click from the relay behind the climate control, and assumed it to be the culprit. But i was pleasantly surprised when a gentle twist of the key towards the starting position clicked everything back on. So its definately an ignition issue. Its happening more and more, and is an annoyance to say the least. My question is, should i be looking at tumblers? Or ignition housings? I definately wouldnt mind having a new key, even though it wont match the doors. In fact, i kind of need a new one to do justice to the last of the "pay it forward key fob" (thanks again rolley!). But i just dont want to buy anything unnecessary, as usual. Any advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

You wish it were as easy as the Tumbler!
This is your problem:
#202 545 01 04 ,The electrical portion of the Ignition Switch. (The return spring is in it.)

I have to do this exact same repair on my 82 when it comes home from the shop... Figured I would grab the good one out of my parts car and give me some practice....

Yep, better get on over to the parts section. Ebay wants $80 and the classic benz guy in my area wants 75 to pull an entire ignition from a junker. Anyway, before i go, anyone know if i have disconnect and pull the whole rig to put the new 8 pin switch on? i just wanted to know what im getting myself into, before i roll up sleeves and march outside with an eighty dollar score to settle. My drivers knee panels are already out anyway, so im hoping this isnt going to take more than an hour or two.

Do you have a bunch of keys attached to your ring? The weight of the keys can be playing on your switch. You can get a factory key for 17.50. Turn it by holding in the center and the plastic fob will stay together.

I think it's POSSIBLE to remove the switch with the assembly still in the colum, but it's DIFFICULT!
you have to have the key in the #1 position I think, then remove the screws from the back, then the switch comes off. i've got a few sitting around, I could verify what needs to be in what position if you wanna change it on the column. oh, and if you go to your mercedes dealer, you can get a perfect match key for your current tumbler that will match your door... or you can order a tumbler, and it will come with a new matched key that will match your door. pretty cheap too. you will need your registration and your driver's license.
