E300 Cluster Swap

I have a 96 E300 that at one time had an E320 cluster swapped into it so it reads "Premium Unleaded Fuel Only." If this were the only issue, and everything else worked, I would leave it, but the fuel gauge does not work and the pixels are fading fast. I want to buy a used or refurbed cluster to swap out, but I am still unclear about how the mileage will read out. I saw on a previous post that the info is stored in the engine CPU, but do I have to have the cluster reset or something, or do I just plug it in and let it read the CPU? Any advice from someone who has done this would be greatly appreciated!

I have the same year car, and when I first purchased it, the fuel gauge always read "full". Paperwork that came with the car indicated that Mercedes diagnosed it as a "failed cluster gauge". I checked the sending unit in the tank, and found no problem. I then went on to see if the fuel gauge could be repaired on its own. From what I found, the entire unit must be rebuilt. As for the mileage issue, I do not think the unit resets itself from the cpu, but I am no expert in that department. Good luck!
