They are very nice. I am not a great wood worker although I have the tools so I may give it a try. I am better at metal work, maybe I could come up with something there, although the Zebra wood would sure look nice in my eventually restored 124.

They hold up pretty well. They do get scratched and scuffed a little over time. But a quick rub down with some find steel wool and a fresh coat of clear every so often and they look new again. I've had mine for a few years now and it still looks pretty good. I haven't put a fresh coat on in a year or so and it still looks pretty good. It still looks better than the plastic head and holds up way better.

The stock keys on my car are kind of loose. I tried a bit of super glue in one but it didn't tighten it up.
I may take some wood and try making one. Thanks for idea. We heat our house with hard wood. I am sure that I can find an interesting chunk.

Hi wooden key buffs.
I made my first wooden key.. I split off a piece of walnut off some fire wood with an axe Smoothed it down to about 1/8th inch, with my old hand plane, cut in a slot with a dremel wheel. Here it is against the piece of wood that I split it from. Still needs a bit of steel wool for finish, but I'm happy. Gone is that fake carbon fibre weave. No plans of making any for others, don't want to hone in on your business. My way takes too long. Hope you like!

I decided to convert another key to wood. I gave the first one to my wife.
Here it is against the original chunk of wood that I split it from.

They look good. I like you idea of cutting a slot with a dremel wheel. I might have to try that. It would eliminate the seam on the sides. What did you use to fill the bottom below the T part of the key?

As far as filler I used what I had in the house, had some clear automotive lacquer that I mixed with some sawdust. I think your polyurethane or epoxy mixed with into a slurry would be what I want to use.
I was amazed at how easy the keys came apart. I first thought that they were molded but they snap together. A fixture would be nice to slot the wood. I used a ceramic stone and then a drill bit to open it up at the ends. If you have 1/8th inch wood you could cut the slot in one piece and save half of your material. Down here in Missouri I have not seen any zebra wood growing but I do have my eye on some burls.
