Look at it this way - there are really nice people in the world who would just as soon scrap a W123 because the ALDA line is clogged, and really nasty people with garages that shame the Blackhawk Collection. You seem to be a person of faith. I don't think your salvation is predicated on how clean or dirty your car is. It's more likely to be predicated on how you judge others based on how they treat their car.

I know the Bible says not to judge others, God will do the judgeing. However, I suppose I am stereotyping everyone with a mistreated car, because they could be driving while restoring it, like me. Forgive me if I have offended, but you probably deserved it. Just Kidding!!

Our kids were quite small, but they wouldn't get in it in the summer because the wool upholstery mad them ichy. I loved that car and had plans to keep it forever. But it was a loosing battle and I sold it about 2 years later. But now I have an 83 240D, (that is what it says on the trunk) but I installed a 617 turbo. I do plan on keeping it forever, but I will be 80 this summer. So there is a big difference in wanting to keep it forever when you are in your mid 30's. Then it could be a long, long time.
Well, Happy Early Birthday! My Aunt, may God rest her soul, told me of her Chevelle she had when she was first married. She was gonna keep it forever, but her ex-husband stole it and had it sold three times and shipped out of state in 24 hours. That was years ago, though. Saturday morning, the 11th, just a couple days ago, she died of cancer, and all her dreams finished vanishing.

I'm just being practical. Junky MBs = cheap cars and parts. Why bite the hand that feeds you?

Good point! Things will eventually wear out, you'll need parts. Oh, does anybody reading this have a light brown cieling piece for a 300D, 1983? I need the one that the rear dome light is in. My piece was missing when I bought the car. Thanks a bunch!!

I agree that it does irritate me but what's more, i've lived this.

I have always kept my 350SDL in the best shape possible and as clean as possible. I even managed to get a hold of the original owner one time and found out that he was the same way (Which explains why mine was in such good shape when I got it)

Now in direct contrast is the Gwagen..... I bought it from someone who NEVER cleaned it, BARELY took care of it. Did nothing but HACK JOB repairs and quite simply, beat the crap out of it. It really goes back to this earlier quote.

I'm disgusted by the previous owner in more ways then one. But i'm hugely impressed that the truck could take the beating that it took and still be in working order.

Here is a before and after shot to give you an idea....

Looks much nicer now! My car was owned by two 'non-carers' and I had and have work to do to it. Worst thing was one was a 'vice-grip' mechanic and had stripped the fan bolts. NOT NICE!! I replaced them with the closest we had here. Been working fine, thankfully. Was a pain in the you know what, though!! I like people who do things properly, like the retired doctor that I clean house for, they kept their 1999 Mercedes-Benz ML 320 immaculate, looks brand new, not kidding. Except that I was with her last winter when a man rear-ended her. Very low speed, very minimal damage.

My Dad sold my parents' 2007 Chevy Suburban to get out of debt. Right after winter started, he bought my Mom a 2011 Lincoln Navigator. We need big SUV's because I'm the oldest of six. The youngest just turned 1 on the 4th. My parents went from $20000 in debt to $65000 on a car. They have a total of $200000 but we have an unfinished house that is 3004sq feet. I am not really excited about payments, but wouldn't mind getting a 1997 SL320 in a year or so. Insurance will be spendy for me because I'll be 16 this May. For just my 300D-turbo, it is $100 a month for liability!! I will be putting full-coverage on her though!

why are you posting the personal financial information of your parents? No offense, but thats not wise on a public web forum.

Id drive the 300D and your old truck for now. Your tastes may change and you are not even 16, no sense getting into any payments of any type when you can avoid it and are young. That type of stuff can build up in what seems like about 15 minutes, and pretty soon you are the 18 year old man with 20 grand in unnecessary car payment debt and thinking about tacking on a lot more for any college.

full coverage on a 300D? thats a waste of money IMO. I can't even get that if I wanted it through my insurance company, the cars are not worth enough.

I really do not want to post in this thread as it is getting long and windy and irrelevant. How a car is treated differ from person to person. Get used to the irritation.

I am surprised that you know so much about your parents finance at 16 years old. You have big but unrealistic dreams for now. Real life is tougher than you think unless you are borne with a silver spoon in your mouth. You need to learn how to handle money before you can own a MBZ dealership if that is what you wanted. Getting a full coverage for an old car is not the way to handle money. Get yourself a good financial book(s), huddle in bed and read it thru. It is not advisable to go into debt to own a car.

In any event best of luck in whatever you want to do.

Ok, that is the third time somebody has said that full-coverage is a waste on that car, so I will probably keep liability, and repair any damage myself.

Oh, I was using my parent's finances as an example of how debt builds up. I don't think it would be a good idea to get a sports car at such a young age, but it sure would be nice. I am going to get a 2004 F-150 redesign this fall though! I'm not keeping my '81! Talk about a deathtrap!

Ah-kay, you're about this thread, long, off point. Plus, I was kinda dumb to post it. It has been a nice conversation though. I've learned from others, gained some wisdom, and though I've been told negative things, I still stand firm in my dreams.

Oh, how bad does the north-east destroy W123s? I'm going to Boston to attend a UTI in about 5 years or so, will be down there for 3 years or so, and want to bring the 300D, but I don't want to destroy it in the proccess. Thanks!!

roads are salted. it will probably survive fine if you wash off the salt and stomp on any rust.

I used that rustcheck stuff that I thought worked pretty well, but the salt is hard on the cars

How are roads treated in AK?

Gravel, well at least the Fairbanks/North Pole area, I'm not sure about the rest. The gravel works fine, I don't see why it isn't used everywhere else. Cost most likely!

As I understand it, it gets too cold for even salt to be effective.

Indirectly. The gravel itself is often cheaper, but you gotta sweep it all up in the spring. The salt just dissolves and pollutes a stream somewhere.
