Can I tow a 94 s350 mercedes with a tow dolly

I just sold a car to another guy and how luck goes I also purchased this S350 in the guys backyard. He is coming to pick up the Jetta with a tow dolly and said will tow the S350 back for the fuel. Im real worried about this but the trip is 12 hours and my health has been bad lately and cash alittle low. Can it do the task? Thanks

No, you can't tow that car for long distances or high speeds without unhooking the driveshaft.

An S350 is a HUGE heavy car, I'd NEVER try that with a tow dolly. Flatbed trailer/truck only!!!

I would say you can tow it with a tow dolly, front end up on the dolly and driveshaft removed. I do think the jetta is to small a car to do the job. Takes a 3/4 ton pickup. That big S350 will "unhinge" that Jetta, I think.

Does it kill the deal for you if you spot him the rental of a flatbed trailer? Or the difference between a dolly and flatbed if he's renting the dolly.

I don't think he's trying to tow the MB with the Jetta. A flat trailer is still the best idea... I know a long wheelbase W126 just fits on a uhaul Auto Transport, and its rated to haul 5,200 pounds... so the W140 should just squeak by.

Remove the drive shaft.

Then the car will be ready to be towed with the rear wheels on the ground.

All other concerns are up the guy doing the towing.

Sorry for the following, but I just cannot resist adding: Buying a 350SD is not going to help your health or your wallet when you find out what it is going to cost to fix the hvac or the rod bent motor.

The S350 will be towed by a Dodge 3/4 ton. and the S350 had both the engine overhauled and the HVAC done at a tune of $3200 two years ago.

How long does it take to drop a driveshaft and at which side doe it come off? At the tranny or the rear diff? Any link that would give clear cut instructions since I wont be there? The guy is a good mechanic which should help but never worked on a MB>

Someone is blowing some smoke. I just priced out pistons, sleeves and bearing set for a 91 350SDL and it came to $4700 just for parts.

Ya, you can't overhaul the engine for that much. As I recall the sleeves were like $900 each

Oh and what year dodge? The 92 D250 we had struggled with my 350 on the auto transport. We ended up leaving it in 3rd (OD off) and going 50 the whole way. IIRC we got 8 MPG.

I rented a flatbed hauler from uhaul a yr or so back, $60 bucks a day.

Why screw with a good MB for $60??

Disconnect the prop shaft at the diff. If you disconnect it at the tranny, it'll flop about and possibly deploy the airbags

Is the SD a project or a runner?
