guide rod replacement

I just replaced the guide rods on my 83 300sd, thought I would give some input.

I used tie downs instead of a come a long to put the rod forward. I first bought a cheap one and had to cut it loose. NOT the best method. Get a decent set and make sure to keep the straps straight when tightening. This will help to loosen them later.

First run the tie down from the bumper support to the tranny brace and just snug it enough to take pressure off.

Loosen the three bolts holding the brace to the mount.

Take the tie down off the brace and relocate it to the inside of the shock and rotor area. I had hooks and they fit perfect. Take up the slack and get a 13 mm to loosen the bolt that is securing the rod to the bushing.

You will need a 19 mm for loosening the bushing from the rod. Make sure to count the threads to match the new bushing. As you turn the bolt keep tightening the tie down so the pressure stays off of the bolt.

After the bolt is out and your wrist it tired, take a break.

The mount is held in with two 19 mm bolts, undo both and the mount will drop down.

I had my brother in law press the new bushing it.

Use the new hardware that came with the kit, putting the plate back on the mount, I used two c clamps so I could get to of the screws started. A 8 mm alan wrench will be needed for this step.

Reverse putting the part back in making sure not to cross thread the bolt.

Hope this helps.
