who are the 350SDL owners?

As you know, I own one but am only now starting to use it more, as the 240D needs some more serious diagnosis and repair.

The car I bought had some problems inflicted not by the prior owner, but by owners previous to him.

I need to talk to some 350SDL owners who can discuss some problems particular to that model.

One big problem I'll have involves the radio, where the wires were all jacked up before the prior owner even got to it.

I also have problems with interior condensation and the vacuum system not working fully enabling me to use the heat to a limited degree and also the blower defroster on high and auto only.

I can't move heat to the floor or the center panel.

Then I need a new dipstick too, as the current one is cracked.

I am collecting info and by March will have a good place to work on the car for a week if i wanted.

In the meantime, I just want to seek out knowledgeable people, including those who can suggest how/where to get some manulas for the car as well as the infamous so-called rod-bender engine.

Thanks,
S

Well the one think you can be thankful of is that most of the issues you listed can afflict pretty much any W126.

I know the heat not getting to the floor is due to a plastic clip breaking behind the dash which prevents a flap from opening which would normally allow heat to the floor (Mine doesn't work either and i'll be handling it come spring time.) I can try and send you a picture on Wednesday of a disassembled W126 interior which shows what the flaps look like. I've seen some people just jam the flap in the open position with an untwisted coat hanger....

350SDL

Well, I've only had mine less than 6 months, and the previous owner is an MB mechanic. The car was extremely well sorted, with no leaks whatsoever, and everything working except a "lazy flap" in the dash. I'll be paying attention going forward... (BTW, engine was replaced by PO around 30K miles ago. Have no idea of source of engine.)

It's my DD, but I work out of my house, and most business trips are well over 100 mi...

Does your car have the becker 1432 radio (one button for on and off)? From your sig it looks like you have a 1990. There are two amps behind the rear seat for the speakers, one for each side of the car.

I purchased a 1986 300 SDL in November and the radio is the Becker unit previously mention. It comes on but no sound. I haven't had time to check it out yet....any suggestions?

Thanks, send me your Paypal address and the cost with postage and you got a deal.
I've been also thinking of replacing the plastic top portion with one made of machined aluminum

Think there would be any takers?

I don't know if you need a new fuse or need to activate the radio code. I've seen two 4 digit radio codes for these models: 1402 and 1435. If they work, more power to you!

I have to slowly crimp on a replacement portion of the wiring harness before I can put any kind of radio in this one.

Then I need to just understand what the system is, I have no documentation on the becker sound system.
I really have very little documentation on the car, guess I need the 126 CD

I currently own two 1991 350's. A 350SD with 200,000 miles, and a 350SDL with 294,000 miles. The 350SD I've driven for 7,000 miles so far, the 350SDL only for 1,000 miles. The 350SDL I just bought it less than a month ago. However a few years back I had a 350SD with 510,000 miles and drove it another 25,000 miles, until it was destroyed in a crash at 535,000. All three had or have the original engines that were installed in the vehicles, at least according to a VIN check at the local MB dealer. I am quite familiar with the 350's. All three of mine were vehicles obtained at area salvage auctions. Two were donated charity vehicles, the other a survivor of a minor crash, which I fixed. The two I'm driving now, both have aftermarket radios installed. Don't know if I can help there, but I'll take a look at the wiring if you need me to. The climate control systems are both operating properly, so I might be able to help there as well. But both are equipped with passenger side air bags, so the configuration under the dash may be different if yours isn't also dual air bag equipped. As far as the mass hysteria concerning the rod bending, I can't help you there, can't relate . But please do keep up the good work I appreciate the continuing help in keeping the prices low on these great cars.

I just drove mine for 180 miles today.

What a fricking terrific ride!

Much as i love the 240 D it's like cheating with another women when you drive the 350SDL.
