What are the Parking devices that pop up on S350 trunk when in reverse

What are the Parking devices that pop up on S350 trunk when in reverse. They are chrome and are on each side of the trunk on a 1994 S350? What is the purpose of these and do they really help?

Parking guides. They were replaced by optional Parktronic in '96.

It marks the corner of the car the way the hood star marks the front end of the car.

The car was deemed so big that it's a visible reference when backing so that you don't run into things.

Thanks for the information, I just dont see how they help that much. These must add a pretty penny to the expense of each car built. These cars drive like a dream. So much different from the same year E300D.

I saw a set on a S-500 in PNP yesterday, they are vacuum operated.
Or at least it looked like a vac line running up to them.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
