That's a great price. Mine was about $100 for an '83 300CD from the local dealer in '10. Other posts had it about the same. Fastlane price for a non-matched tumbler is in the $30's.

I do have a question.... the spring loaded button on the end of that part used to lock the steering, is it supposed to have a slight angle on it? I am guessing that makes it easier to slide into place? Or is that worn?
If you mean the part at the very end of the 'stalk' that engages into the steering column, I think that part is flat.

If you mean the little button that engages in the tube, I believe that is rounded. See the pdf.

In any case that's included in the new ignition housing.

You did a good job. To make it even easier, if you have a paper clip available, make it roughly straight so it is easy to use, then bend it in a nice curve to roughly reach the two screws and hold it with your fingers. There might be a spark or two when connecting, but required amps is super low and it might warm up if you held it there for a long time, like a long time. Great way to move the engine over when adjusting valves - probably what it is there for.

Yea I was afraid of getting shocked, so I used insulated everything!
I knew there would be a spark, but it still pumps me up a little!

if batteries are leaking, the alternator is OVERCHARGING them. pull your alternator, and have it tested ASAP!

Thanks for the parts Neuman! Getting to see your other old cars was great fun!
This car was not the other one I was thinking of, not even close to a rust bucket, I was surprised it was being parted.

John the alternator is an aftermarket from the local auto zoo, 55 amp if I remember correctly, maybe 1 year old. Do you think trying to start the car so many times w/o letting the starter cool down could have caused the battery problem? Or just the alternator going bad? What else should I have checked? I dont want to get stranded again

Electrical connections and grounds? To and from the battery starter and alternator? I do know sometimes the battery cables can get corroded enough to need replacing
