Alternator belt query
Hey guys, heres a quick one.
I see there be two belts running the alternator in my 1984 300d. One of them is squealing like a pig, the other one is fine, so the tension is good. This squealer mustve strethched out over time, or been too big to begin with. Are they both necessary for the alternator to funtion properly? Or is one just sorta there for backup? I only ask because the euro parts store is across town, and that squeal is pretty unbearable. Since its not really doing its job so well anyway, would it be imprudent to cut the squealer and go get the new belt? I mean, its bad enough to emit a burning rubber smell, so its in danger of snapping anyway, seems like. What do you guys think? I dont wanna take the bus lol. I've got a mercedes for cryin out loud...(which it what it is doing) Thanks fellas.

IF
If memory serves me......those are a "matched set" of belts. And IF my memory is still good those kind of belts should be replaced as a set.

I'm not sure i understand this scenario correctly. How can only one of the belts squeal? If only one squeals then the other must be turning the pulleys correctly which means there shouldn't be a difference in speed to cause a squeal in the first place. You sure it's not the tight belt that is squealing because it can't hold the load by itself?

Diesel giant has got them for 42.50, but doesn't mention if they were goodyear engineered or anything special. Has anyone bought these, or any belts from the giant? Are they pretty solid?

Quote:
The reason that two belts are used has nothing to do with redundancy. Two belts allows the belt tension to be reduced by 50%. Reduced tension translates to longer bearing life in the accessories.
