It may be time to let go of my 300CD. Thinking of Ebay.
Well, I've had it for about 2 years, and I NEVER have the chance to enjoy it.
I really want to know what to ask for it. I'm thinking of putting her on Ebay and would like an idea of what to start the auction at, and what members here think it may end up at. She's got rust bubbles here and there starting to show in places around the wheel-wells etc... The paint still has an amazing shine. I bought this from a divorcee in NC who had it stripped and repainted in 2000. So, after 12 years, it needs touch ups here and there, and some spot rust repairs. She had them use PPG Deltron BaseCoat/ClearCoat products. I didn't care for her having them paint the wheels the same color as the car, but I also didn't feel like bothering with it either...lol. Last year, I installed a new compressor, accumulator, and expansion valve. I also installed a new right front caliper. And I also had 4 new tires installed. After I installed the new AC components, I never got around to driving it much, so I never got around to charging it. But it did hold a vacuum after the new parts were installed. The rubber around the windows is very weathered. I had Martureo pick me up a nice set of rubbers for both sides of the car. I'll let them go with it. The tires literally have about 240 miles on them, I drive it about once every 3 months around town. For anyone who's never driven a w123 coupe, I cant explain the difference. It shouldn't feel different, but for whatever reason, it does. Like a w123 wagon, it's a feeling all its own. Anyway, a coupe simply isn't practical for me, and obviously has proven to be as much as I hardly drive it. I also simply need to start selling off some cars and let others enjoy them. They aren't doing much good just parked in my driveway. So, I'll be listing about 4 or 5 more cars throughout the year as I get time. But anyone who has any experience with these coupes, I would appreciate some "rough" idea what to ask for it. I would be willing to drive it a few hundred miles to meet the winning bidder, but that's mainly because I would actually get a chance to get it out on the highway, hehe. It's got about 188,000 on it if I recall. Runs great, and drives very well. Thanks in advance to everyone that knows these coupes for their opinions. I'm going to miss all the comments on the car I get when driving it around town in the summer.

Also, I have a brand new set of glass Euro Headlights. Does anyone think those installed would help it fetch a bit more? Or should I leave the OE USA issued lights in it?

Jusme, since your close to me I could probably save you lots of time. But my wife would not like me or you.......I already have 2.
Nice car ! Don't forget a reserve to your liking and lots of pics for ebay. You might want to consider CL first to see if you get any bites and include a link to a photobucket pic spread which most people seem to never do for some reason. I sold an Airstream camper last year on CL for 30 k (exactly what I gave a year before) using a photobucket pic album and a good description. Ebay is ok as a last resort and CL is great IF you change ad often and renew with pics changed around etc. People get bored easily with same ad/pics so renew often changing ad heading and so on, good luck. jusme, you don't like SDL's very much, do you? seriously tho, I've seen 300CD's posted all over the web for wildly divergent prices, imho, I think it should be worth no less than $1500, but that's not to say I don't think it should be worth more, it's just that without seeing it in person, it's too hard to say. I've seen some very slick ones on ebay bring 8K-14K also. Those were the final bids. With bubbles showing in the paint tho, I can't encourage someone into believing they could get those top tier prices tho. Service records can add to the value of course. The turbo models definitely bring more especially from 1983 on. I wouldn't install the euro headlights, but would offer them for at least a nominal additional charge if the buyer would be interested, they alone can sometimes fetch somewhere around $200-$300, so take that into consideration on pricing the "option". Just one thought tho, changing out only one caliper on one side of the car and not the other isn't one of the best selling points, would be a huge plus to do the other one on the other side too. Btw, I own one, and having been following the market closely on w123 coupes for several years around the nation fwtw.

Thanks Gear! Alot of good points! I wonder if I started it at $1500, what it would end up at. Hmm, I may end up doing that.

So in 1980 there were only 1,770 300CD's produced for world wide sales, kind of low production, dontcha think? Jusme, you reeeaally sure 'bout turnin' it loose? I spent a number of years looking for mine too. I don't drive mine much either, mostly ever so often tinker with "upgrades", that is repairs that should have been done by the p.o.
Sleepstar, I'm glad to hear that they bring that kind of money there in Oakland, I really think they should be worth at least that too and so many are listed for so much less. I don't think some people know what they have, eh? Btw, is that Oakland, CA? I'm with DesertPanther, I really like the color-keyed wheels too, works well with that color. All in all, I enjoy ever minute of those times I take mine for a drive however short it may be, which averages may be once every couple of weeks. I still think it was worth the long arduous hunt. I don't think I'll ever regret it nor do I believe I'll ever sell it either. The memories that haunt me are of the ones I sold off a "just gotta have one" because at some given moment I thought, "Geez I really don't drive it much, I won't miss it, what the heck..." |

Hey, I think I remember you telling me the story of going to pick this one up. I was very envious at the time. A friend of mine is shopping for a CD, I will pass this along. He is not a member here, drop me an email and I will connect you two.
He is here in Arlington and would definitely take very good care of it. I drool over a couple of his other well cared for cars.

My advice when selling on eBay is to set definite time limits both for the initial deposit and for picking up the car. Be clear about what will happen if they don't show. Do not give them the title until they show up with the means to move the car. I once sent a guy the title to a car after he sent me payment in full. Then I never heard from him again and I was stuck figuring out how to dispose of a car that no longer legally belonged to me.
