W123 Diesel manual gearbox gurus where are you?

G'day Folks,

Does anyone happen to know if all 717.400 5 speed gearboxes are / were made by Getrag? Or were the ZF ones also given that number?

How can I tell the difference between a ZF and a Getrag? Having never seen one (you see?) I'm forced into asking these daft questions...

...I'm guessing the answer to the last question will be one has the ZF logo and the other has Getrag written on it but hey just in case there's another way...

ZF didn't make 5-speeds for the W123, only for the W114. All 5-speeds for the W123 were made by Getrag. The 4-speeds were made by Getrag and ZF. The 300D only had the ZF, because of the better quality of the ZF transmission.

The shape of the transmission is different. The ZF is a humpback, whilst the Getrag has a flatback.

Thanks Govert - I mis-understood you / didn't remember what you said about the 5 speed when we met. I thought you said that the ZF was the better gearbox - but if it was never made for the W123 then there's no choce to be had.

PS do you want a lead for a really cheap 5 speed quite close to you - well possibly close to me?

ZF made the 4-speeds for all models until about 1980. After that Getrag also made 4-speeds and later 5-speeds. The ZF 4-speed was kept for the 300D, but the lower-powered models 200D and 240D had the Getrag 4-speed. The Getrag wasn't liked by taxi-fleet owners, because they weren't as durable when used in taxis (with a lot of shifting).

Thanks for the offer, but a 5-speed under a 200D doesn't make sense. And cheap ones are usually bad ones, although they can be overhauled of course.

In this case I think the so called expert doesn't know what he's got.
