85 300CD 4 spd. checking it out tomarrow

My Bro-In-Law called me a few minutes ago, and is all excited. He found an 85 300CD, 4-spd. $3500.

1985 Mercedes 300CD 4-Speed Manual Tran.

1985 Mercedes 300CD 4-Speed Manual Tran. - $3500 (hayward / castro valley)

So tomarrow afternoon we are going to take a look at it. I know it is just a W123, but does have some coupe specific parts. so we`ll see what it is when we get there.

What do you think?

Charlie

For a car with a salvage title- I'd be very leery. Even though it looks great from the pics, I think the price is out of line for a car with a junk title. IMHO. I'd also check with your insurance carrier before you make the drive- I looked at a "salvage/junk title" car in Texas- (got water in the intake and needed/got an engine swap) and they would not even insure it.

That looks like a very sweet car.

I guess the insurance angle is worth checking out but as far as value goes it looks nice and rust free, the interior looks pretty sweet and the body looks straight and complete. The transmission has already been done the way I would want it too.

I would like to have it.

I would not waste any time getting there and would take cash along. You'll be lucky to get it before it is gone, IMHO.

2 --- 300CD here

Sorry for the hijack, Charlie. Wanted to b sure Tom saw these:

I saw this one in person, about 185Kish miles and the paint is in very good condition as are all the rubber window seals. I found the interior wood to be interesting --- Very Nice condition. This car probably has spent a night outside nor without the MB cover on it (it's in the trunk)
1979 mercedes 300cd

And this one is from the guy I bought the parts wagon off of; although I didn't look at the CD:
Mercedes 300CD Diesel - Rare Car!

I don't know how rare it is, but I like the exterior color better than the yellow one.

The one in Memphis cost more, but comes with an extra engine cylinder !!!

I have always had a interest in a CD, and the one in Hayward appears in great condition. I can't justify plane tix across country, plus $600 fuel to bring it home, then the salvage title issue.

One question, is the headroom less than the 300D ?

Well, the roof is 2" lower but the seat bottom is tilted to give that back to you so the answer is probably about the same.

I know a salvage title can be from minor stuff. a little fender bender, and submitting an insurance claim, can total these cars.
Buy the car back and fix the damage, then getting it retitled can give it a salvage title.

we`ll see what it is when we get there, I`ll go over it with a fine tooth comb. I do know talking with my Bro-in-Law from the conversation with the owner, the guy has only had it 2yrs or so, and the 4-spd was in it at that time.
also the egr was deleated, so we know nothing is original under the hood to some degree.
This is just another 27 yr old MB with issues like they all have. No rust is the #1 thing to look for, and a magnet to check for Bondo repairs on the panels. windows, AC, Sun Roof, axles/boots, oil leaks, front suspention, look under the floor mat for MC leakage, brake fluid color, check under the Battery tray for rust etc.... and the list goes on.

It only 65 miles to by Bro in law, then about 35 miles to hayward, so not all that far. and it is the hunt that is the challenge.

Thanks for the replys, know it is the week end and 1/2 the guys are off doing wifey things so a little slow.

i've not had personal experience with this, but some CL users list cars with salvage titles and claim the reason they're salvaged is that at one point someone stole the car.

i noticed the glovebox doesn't match the rest of the dash so maybe someone broke in vandalized the car heavily?

I noticed that also, and the wood piece on the right end is a lighter color. but wood can be replaced with good pieces from PNP. the center consol is missing a piece also.

there is a block off plate on the center console, where the mirror adjust stick goes... why does this car have no passenger side mirror?

the paint on the outside loks too good for the dash. Seats look OK. MT wasnt ever available. Check all the funky vacuum stuff and klima relay to see if it is really an 85.

Part of the wood has been replaced and part has been refinished. The upper console part isn't installed correctly and appears to have had the zebrano sanded off (note the dramatically different grain). The wood on the cars is matched with a trim number on the back so the parts look similar to each other.
