I believe you need to again confer with the mechanic on the true situation. I don't see any possibility of the larger side flanges fitting into the smaller SDL diff.

In my situation, I had to get the larger axles from the 420SEL to fit the larger diff.

There was no other possibility.

strange it is...

but again
I bought that 91 sdl diff from wrecked sdl
I took it to my mechanic
I watched him doing it
I still have my old 2.24 diff in backyard...

it was 10 months ago and I have no issues with "new" diff ever since...

do you have diff gen1?

We're speaking only of Gen 2............forget Gen 1.

Can you take a look at that diff and see if it has side flanges that are bolted on? Look in the OP's photos. One diff has bolted on side flanges and the other does not. His 2.88 diff is the smaller diff without the bolt on side flanges. Your diff, a later diff from a '91, might be the larger diff with the smaller axle flanges.

This wouldn't make much sense from M/B's perspective, but............anything is possible.

If your current diff does not have the side flanges, then someone is giving you a story...........those larger axles would not fit.

Thanks Brian, your posts have been very helpful. I am trying to locate the two axles now, had I realized I needed them I could have gotten the ones from the donor car for the Diff. I will let you all know how it works out.

As for why I would change the ratio? I could not locate a 2.88 at the time and I really wanted to lower freeway RPM (this should take 400 revs off the tach at speed)

I don't recall how quickly the car shifted out of first, but I expect some loss of low end performance. I'll let you know.

Exact same problem with the 300SE. Nobody knew the axles for the smaller diff are longer and have smaller cap screws (10mm).

Fortunately I found a set from a local junkyard for $100. Boots were in good shape as well.

I had the exact thought with the 300SE and the 3.46 that it had. The 2.47 is going to be a remarkable change. When I get the trans to start in first gear, the vehicle will be absolutely perfect.
