Wrap

One recycled rear window later, I'm no longer driving around in eastern Canadian winter with a tarp flattering on the back window.

A couple of side notes: I now realize the back glass on my car wasn't factory. The 'new' glass has the "Securit/MBstar" logo in the corner and has a slight blue tint. The other was clear with no markings.

Also the defroster wires on this glass seem to heat up about twice as fast.

Mercedes glass in Canada for W126

For reference I got a new rear glass for my 126 300SD last year at Speedy Auto Glass. It was under $200 for the new glass and the defroster works great. No MB logo however so I think it is a knock off part.

At that time they had two more back windows in stock nationally and it was NLA for new orders from the manufacturer. They shipped it for me from Toronto to BC at no charge too. Pretty decent.

Rust under the seal was quite nasty - had to have new metal welded in.

$200 installed or just for the glass?

About 4 years ago, when I owned the 84 SD, one morning I walked out to the garage and noticed my rear left window was missing and there were pieces all over.

To this day I still have no idea why that happened. As far as I remember the window was fine. No one else was in the garage (wasn't a break in). So as happened to you, it seemed to spontaneously combust. Luckily glass is a no deductible item with my insurance carrier. I simply called them and one day later I had a new rear window at no cost to me.

I'm going to add some comments for general interest sake... and 'cause I'm on my fourth brandy and I feel like a rant :

Wow. Well zero deductible on anything is a thing long past in car insurance in my neck of the woods. Well not unless you pay through the nose for it (as in paying $150 more a year to have a zero instead of $500 deductible).

Also the problem here is that once you claim... you get jacked the next year. (Albeit if you've been with a company for a while, you may get one freebie.)

I had exactly the same mysterious slide-glass breakage scenario, years back, on my Volvo Turbo. Called the agent. She said, "Steve, I'd highly recommend you just pay for it yourself... leave it off your claims file." So I did it out of pocket.

Aside: I claimed for sewer backup on my house policy last year. It was minor: maybe $3500 total? No other claims since I've owned this house, ten yrs.

My renewal came in with a 50 PERCENT increase. I had to comparison shop NINE companies before I got one that agreed to a rate close to my old one. All the rest agreed with the assessment of the company I had claimed on (here they have group access to a common claims info database). Had I known, I would have splashed out myself for the whole thing (as it was I ate $1500+ in plumber charges the insurance didn't cover).

Right now I only plan to claim on my house insurance again if one of the 100-year-old trees in my yard flattens it, or a windstorm peels the roof off. Like the Generation-Yers say, this is redunculous, dude....
