om617 govenor cut off
Hello guys. I have a quick question. I wonder what is the govenor cutoff on om617? I have an 82 300td and revved it up in park yesterday and it ran past 5000. I just did it for a split second. I have a couple 94-98 cummins dodges and i know the cutoff on them is 2700rpm stock. Thanks guys.

The Mercs have a much higher rev limit. I believe that fuel starts to be cut off progressively at 4200 RPMs. What that means, is that you may be able to rev to 5500 RPMs, but will progressively lose HP & torque after 4200. It also has to do with who adjusted the IP at the factory & or afterwards.

for the OP. Larger Engines due to their heavier moving parts cannot take the higer RPMs so the cut out is set lower to protect the Engine. Remember a moving Piston in an Engine actually stops going one way and has to change directions. You can try this yourself. Tie an object to a Rope; let it hang about 1.5 feet from you Hand. Get a good grip on the Rope spin it around. The Faster you spin it the heavier the object on the end feels. Do the same thing but with something heavier on the end of the Rope. If you try the above do it safely.

The maximum speed unloaded of the OM617 is usually between 4800–5400 rpm.
Under load you usually cannot get higher than 5000 rpm. |
