W126 fuel filter not going back on

Is it me - or is this more difficult than it looks?

This is the third car I have replaced main fuel filter on. The first one was a challenge - the second one went fairly quick and now this one is really annoying me. I think I may have buggered threads in main filter while screwing onto fuel filter housing bolt. Purchased a MAHL fuel filter - and there is hardly any clearance - it appears to be around the same size as the MANN fuel filter that was originally on there. The oil filter wrench is useless on this size main fuel filter. I has to resort to holding main fuel filter and unloosing main fuel filter housing bolt a few turns to get it off. I know there are some after market fule filters that are narrower (that would enable an oil filter wrench to fit in there to remove them - but either way screwing them back on is no easy task. Anyone have a technique I am not aware of for reinstalling fuel filter?

Remove the center bolt from the housing. push up from under it and it will pop out, also good time to replace the 2 "O" rings.
Note: assuming you have the short bolt, longer bolt uses one "O" ring and an aluminium washer under the head.

Try screwing the bolt in the filter holding it in your hand. It might just be the angle you are holding filter under the housing, and the threads are not starting in the filter.

once the bolt is out, look to see if the threads are buggered up.

You shouldn't ever need to use an oil filter wrench to re/re the main fuel filter. Once you loosen the bolt up a little it should spin off and on easily and shouldn't be tightened with an OF wrench. I was taught to hand-tighten the filter then gently snug up the bolt.

I assume you mean you have a MAHLE filter... there are differences in case diameter between different brands, that is normal.

I can't imagine how you could mess up the threads unless you were forcing the filter on. I do seem to recall that on my '83 SD I used to have some issues getting the filters to start threading, but it always worked.

Is it possible you were sold the wrong filter?

Charmalu

Took your advice and in less than 1 minute had the fuel filter threaded on properly. I have to tell you when I pushed up on the bolt - it popped like a champagne bottle! Thx

Great.

I hope you filled the filter before screwing it on. saves on a bunch of Primer pumping to get it filled to purge the air.
When I do mine, it`s filled to the brim, then just give it a few pumps to be sure and fire her up.

I fill mine with ATF or Diesel Purge, then I know it is coming out if a clean bottle compared to pouring it from a fuel container you filled at a station. this will lessen the chance of dirt, water etc... entering the filter.

I topped it off with diesel fuel and added some stabil-it, primed it a few times so pre-filter was about filled up - started it up and then backed out of garage and let it idle outside for 20 minutes Then checked pre-filter and it is still clean - so I assume/hope my fuel tank is ok. Also added some Stabil-IT to fuel tank - thx everyone!
