W123 Turbo Diesel in the Mountains-how do they fair?

I am taking a trip to Breckenridge from Missouri this summer, and am considering taking the Benz for the mileage and so we don't have to rent a car. How do these do at altitude? Any tips or thoughts?

Thanks,

Should do fine. just make sure the valves are adjusted, fuel filters changes, and the boost line from the Intake Manifold to Switch Over valve is cleaned out.

Go for it and have a great vacation.

We have had our 85 300D up to 9000 and 10,000ft elevation up near Vail Colorado. ran really good. this is after we had removed the Trap Oxidizer etc... and changed it back to like an 83 300D is set up.
also at that time we had the old engine in the car with 300K on it.

They perform very well at altitude, especially compared to other NA vehicles which lose substantial horsepower at altitude. I've pulled a heavily loaded trailer and 5 people over the Divide and Vail Pass with my 123 TD.

My 300SD makes the trip up our local ski hill 2 or 3 times a week. Apart from the stone chips from the gravel that they call "road sand" around here, everything is going great.

These are good vehicles in the mountains and solid winter cars as well, although the bodywork does take more of a beating in the snow.

Go for it.

The biggest problem you'll have is while you're there. Even with chains be sure to park on a very flat area. I had a 126 I took to my ski area (Mammoth.) Parked on a road with a very slight incline. Next morning snow on the road and about 3"-4" around the tires. It was extremely difficult to feather the throttle enough to get the wheels rolling over the hump of the new snow before the turbo kicked in. When it did the chains got ripped off the tires when the turbo kicked in. If you're rolling, no problem, but choose your parking carefully at night or when it's snowing. The car performed extremely well at high altitude in those mountains even on icy and snowy roads. Just the transition from normal aspiration to turbo can create a problem if you're not careful.
