Rear subframe bushings
Please forgive me if this has been posted already - I searched the forums and DIY links and was unsuccessful.
Anyone have a link for a walkthrough for replacing rear subframe mount bushings? |

This is specifically for a W123 (although the W114 / 115 / 116 / 126 first gen {may be second too?} are similar)
It isn't written as a DIY but is shows the process I went through Rear subframe removal and bushing replacement It might not be specifically mentioned but the rear springs need to be removed before you just whip out that bullet-like pin!

Oh and do us a favour and either stick some vehicle information in your first posts or in your sig.

Ya, kind of important what model you have. the W123 is different than the W124.
Here is a quick search on the W123 PeachParts Search Here is a quick search on the W124 PeachParts Search Charlie

My bad, fixed the sig. I will check out your post Army and thanks for the search links. This is definitely a job out of my comfort zone but it needs to be done and I'm broke, so - tally ho.

Don't forget the link I posted is for a W123 - it will be different from you are going to see... however, I think the principles are more or less the same on the W115.
From this picture found via EverythingBenz - Mercedes-Benz Forum and Web Search Using Google you can see that there's an extra bushing above the subframe on the W115 but the rest of it looks familiar.

YOU CAN DO IT.

All the more reason to DIY. I haven`t been under a W115, so not up to speed on them. but you can do this job. I replaced the bushing under the rear of our 85 300D. dropped the whole thing out. painted everything, replaced the bushings, replaced the Diff with a lower milage one, and replaced the trailing Arms with lower milage ones. slid it all back under and buttoned it up. I just read up on what other guys had done, and seemed complicated, until I tore into it. the job takes a little time, but is pretty simple. Then you will have the satisfaction of doing it your self. Unfortunately you'll quickly find that not all of the parts numbers are displayed as you scroll through the pages... but it is a start - at least you have a picture to take down to the dealer and say "hey I want number 6 please".

Sorry the penny has dropped - I was posting on your W115 rust + undercoat thread wasn't I?
You'll have to bear with me - I'm getting old and I forget where I've been!

If you post your location you might be able to find an experience member close by willing to help for a couple beers. A lot of jobs on these cars seem a little intimidating at first but once you get into them you find it's easier than you think.

@ Biodiesel300TD We're practically neighbors. I'm in Eugene. I'll be fine on this one, just stressing a little. It would be great if anyone could give me a list of tools that are required/nice to have for this job though. My tool collection is pretty basic, and I want to make sure I have everything on hand. @ Army Reading through your thread, very helpful. I will print it up, keep it at hand, and maybe note any differences in procedure I encounter for other 115 owners. PS Got the Chilton's Mercedes 68-73 manual coming in the mail, looking forward to having a reference resourse that is hopefully decent enough to get me through the routine stuff. You guys are all awesome and I don't want to wear you out asking about the basics.
