replacing starter solenoid

my solenoid went bad on the starter. got a new one and replaced it today, but obviously i did something wrong. now when i turn the key i get a humming/whirring and then a grinding sound as i turn the key off. tried putting the new one in just the way i saw the old one come out, but obviously i did something wrong. is there anything special i should know?

one particular thing that i wasn't sure about was the orientation of the spring locked part that slides into the casing on the starter. any special way that needs to be oriented?

The diagram is the only info I have.

I am sure folks are going to ask if it was a real Bosch Solenoid and also what your original symptoms were.
