Primer pump trick?
Is there any trick to getting an old style primer pump off an 80 300D ?
I removed the in line filter hose and still can't get a wrench in there A fellow said it might be 22 but my 22 wrench doesn't seem to want to go on the unit Is there a trick to this? (besides worlds of patience?) |

Grab a big set of pliers and twist it by the old pump, that's what worked for me. Others have used a basin wrench in the past with success as well.

I removed the lift pump, but you need a new gasket when reinstalling.

I use a faucet wrench if you have one around or I think a crow's foot works. I always go to my plumber's stuff and use the faucet wrench, a chepo one might not work as the finger that goes around back is sometimes too fat.

Harbor Freight sells a Cheap one that you use your own Extensions with.
On the old Style Hand Primer with the shiny Aluminum Body using an open end Wrench or a Crows Foot open end Wrench often simply mushes the Metal as the Aluminum tube of the Hand Primer is soft and thin.

Next to the pump is the filter hose that you removed. The trick is to remove the male fitting that fits to that hose. You have direct access to that fitting from the rear side. Once the fitting is removed, you have direct access to the flats on the pump from the rear side. |

I just finished this job not more than 15 minutes ago on a 220D. And though removing the male fitting helped, I still didn't have enough room to get a wrench in there, sheet metal in the way, and it's already a tight fit getting the wrench head in there. I ended up cracking it loose in about 10 seconds with a pair of vise grips. Just make sure that you cover the open hole(s) in the lift pump with something. Fishing metal shavings out with q-tips in the dark wasn't very cool. P.S. The new style Bosch pump is a dream, $17 well spent.

I already know this Just testing you guys. Previous owner installed primary fuel filter with arrow pointing to fuel tank, should be pointing to lift pump? Correcto?

I crushed the body of the pump with a wrench (in an attempt to unscrew it), and had to then hammer a long flathead screwdriver into the plastic top of the old pump... I then turned the handle of the screwdriver with a wrench.
Was ugly, but worked. |
