123 tranny into 116?

I have a friend that just bought a 116 that needs a tranny. Well one from a 83 123 work? I'm not sure of the exact year, except it is the later 617 tranny. Thanks

I can't say for sure, but I do think both of those models have a cable speedometer.

My 79 116 had a rod instead of a bowden cable. Don't know if this makes the trannys incompatible or not.

i'm driving an 81 300D with a trans from a 116.. so if it works that way, i'm guessing it would work the other way? late model 116s had the vacuum garbage that would be needed to control the 123 trans. but yeah, late 123 i think used a cable instead of a rod

1982 & newer 123's used a different trans (722.3XX or 722.4XX) than the 116's (722.2XX?). They are interchangeable, as long as you get the linkage on the cam cover for the bowden cable. The 116 trans (as stated above) has a control rod instead of a cable. You will need the torque converter that goes with the 123 trans as well, and maybe the flex plate (not really sure if it is different).

Thanks for all the feed back. I have the 123 tranny still buckled up to the engine so it sounds like all the stuff he needs should be there. I dont know what year the 116 is but it looks like we can make it work.

One more question, one of the parts cars he has is a Euro gasser 116, I dont spoz the tranny out of that would work in the 116SD?

Maybe with the exception of the control rod, the gas 116 trans should be the same. Some folks say the gear ratios are different, but I don't know if that would be any big deal it it were the case.

Automatics from gassers shift at higher rpm. They will work but the shift points will be a little odd.

I have a very good automatic from a 115, 1974. If the 116 is near the same year they probably are the same if for diesel. It's listed in for sale here.
