1992 300D vacuum leak

I can hear air leaking from this thing, i know it is something to do with vacuum. What does this thing do? Is it normal for air to leak out when the car is shut off?

It's part of the Electro/Vacuum actuators

That control the EGR and the Flapper Valve Inboard of the Turbocharger.
(The flapper Valve's sole purpose is to "Choke Off" clean fresh air from the crossover pipe at idle)

MB's name for it is a pressure converter (also called a vacuum actuator). Your 92 has two of them; the earlier design in the 90 and 91 utilized three. On my 91 they hiss at me a bit when I shut off the car, but I haven't noticed any ill effects. On my 92, their failure was the cause of my poor acceleration. Replacing them made a night and day difference.
