Anyone vouch for me?
Hey everyone,
I'm going to be traveling to NYC this coming weekend with a friend of mine to purchase a 560SEL. The current owner wants to know that I'm trustworthy and a good guy. I was hoping that someone you gents on here would vouch for me. I've been on here for quite a few years and have learned a lot and tried my best to contribute and be as helpful as possible. If you're willing or interested drop me a PM. I figure DD is probably the best place to post as I've never spent much time in OD. -Kris

Tell the seller you will guarantee the funds if he will guarantee the car!

Well, yes, normally it is the other way around.
Due to things out my control, we're going to be using the current owners tags/plates to drive the car home. He just wants to know that I'm trustworthy to do such a thing. I've done it in the past with my 190E and I'm sure other members on here have done it as well.

I'm just curious as to the rules in your Home state. Here in MA I can and have. . .buy a car out of state. But I brought the tags and reg, from a car I own. That car is up to date, insured etc. . . I put those tags on the car and drive home. IF I get pulled over, I can show the registration of car that matches the plates AND my bill of sale/title of the car I'm driving. MA gives me 7 days to get new plates and registration for the "new to me" car. Will Ohio allow the same?? Or better still will your insurance company? i am only telling you this in the hopes it makes your transaction smoother. . Good luck with the new car.

Well that does pose some risk for the seller. Why don't you take an extra plate and registration along from your home, take them from any vehicle you own. In most states you have 2 weeks or 15 days to register a used car purchase.

I've seen several people advice against using other cars plates on the car. The insurance company said they've no problem with it all they need is the vin number to insure it and we'd be all set. NYS had an interstate temp tag one can get however no DMV is open on the weekend and none of us can get up there during the week.

The problem with using my cars plates is that this entire ordeal is for my friend not me. The only other car he has we'll be driving up in. I'm not so sure its a good idea to put MY plates on HIS car, you know what I mean?

If your state allows it, what could be wrong with running perfectly legal plates on a car you just purchased??
worst case. . .you get in an accident. its your fault. . If you are within the legal time limit (lets say 7 days) You are 100% insured just as if the accident happened in the car whom the plates actually belong. That's how MA works. . .gotta check with your state. In MA there are no such thing as "temp tags" A car is fully registered and insured, or it's not on the road. Brian

Well, regardless of whose plates are on the car, if they are not registered to you or come with the car and you are the new owner, the car is improperly registered. With his plates or your plates. I would say on some of these things you got to "wing" it. Got a friend who is a new or use car dealer, they usually are pretty easy to borrow a plate from. Dealer plates cover a lot. Make sure you have adequate insurance on the car you are driving. That will take car of 98 and a half percent of all your problems. Then go for it! - and drive carefully!

I do have a temporary IN paper plate, good through 3 19 12. I will send that to you if you are interested. Again just paper plate, not my registration. Tape that in your rear window and throw it away when finished.

I guess I don't get what the issue is about. Tags are really just proof where the taxes were paid. As long as both the seller and buyer have a copy of the bill of sale, he has nothing to worry on the tags.
To finish the coverage, call the insurance compay of the buyer and tell them you want to add the new VIN when the car is turned over. Once the seller has the bill of sale, the car is no longer covered by his insurance. (Include the time and date on your bill of sale) Most insurance companies will now e-mail you proof of insurance.

In my province, the DMV will issue a temporary permit for a daily fee (last time I got one, it was $12/day IIRC), as long as the vehicle in question is insured (any valid insurance card will do as you have 7 days or more coverage on a newly purchased vehicle), and the inspection MUST be valid (which would involve getting the owner to fax a copy to you), and in my case, a valid out-of-province inspection is acceptable. (Even DMV is not anal enough to expect a home province inspection if the vehicle has never been there.)
Worth a shot.

Never a good idea to drive with someone else's plates. Its generally legal to drive it without any so long as you have the signed title proving you just bought it. Thats how it works around here.
