Thanks all! I'm going to try to blow the tank back out. There was definatley an extreme sucking noise while I was in Oregon - and the thing is they fill up your tank - it's weird. So.....I've actaully been driving it for a couple weeks - not knowing the tank was collapsed. Crazy. There is NO suction any longer.

Actually you can fill your car if it is a Diesel. But a gasser, they have to fill, from my understanding.
My Daughter lives in Portland, and she said it has to do with creating jobs is why they pump your fuel. So far I haven`t had any problems with filling my own vehicle. Charlie |

Rollguy, did you try to blow through the check valve? one way on mine was more restricted that the other way, really had to blow to get any air through it.
So that is when I gave it a ream job with a Phillips screwdriver. I also replaced the 2" piece of 30yr old hose. they get pretty deteriorated through the years. Charlie |
If you have a vent that cannot be cleared, Here"s an option:

Thanks for the super clear photo ROLLGUY - still waiting till Saturday to do clean out the vent. I'm actually still going to try blowing out the tank too - but I am getting a new to me one for $150 - as it looks like there will probably be a crease in it.
I've already had the tank out once to clean it, cleaned all the lines - a year and half ago - did not know that there was even a vent to clean! Costly learning experince! Cj* Quote:

My car was abandoned by my roommate - living in our feild for 3 years (or so) because it drove super slow up hills! I didn't pay much attention to it then - until I crashed my 92 Toyota pickup. She gave me the car - I jumped it and it started and I drove it on the back roads to my mechanic and he went through it all and gave me a list of all this things we needed to do for it. Using this site we've pulled and cleaned the tank, replacing tank screen, changed shocks, rebuilt the brakes, replaced fuel lines and fuel primer pump, ect..... That's all I can think of now. I had the mechanic give it a valve job and it's running like a champ.
I'm going to buy a 85 300TD this weekend from a friend. I think it's a really sweet car - only 169,000 original miles! So excited! Cj* Quote:

Too bad you are replacing the tank. That $150 could go a long way for other needs. A crease in the tank is not a problem if it doesnt leak.
Let us know the blow by blow and get pics to share as you get it fixed. This will help future members and maybe end up in the DIY section. Quote:

Do you mean a Valve adjustment? Arbitrarily pulling the head to do a valve job seems kind of silly (due to expense).
Yep - Valve adjustment! You have to give us lots of pics. The TD is so loved by some of us. I'd love to have another. Low mileage too.[/QUOTE] Will do! |
.
well I took a video today to determine noise level while opening tank cap after 30min ride: 17032012069 - YouTube does it sound bad? p.s sry for filthy hands, just finished repairing front window holder... :D . |

Are you located in Virginia? Your forum location says Europe, but your video title is a local phone number for me. Since the pressure change at the fuel cap is subjective, I will pay closer attention on my car. I have to fuel in the next couple days and will share. Saw your other 4 vids, what is an "MW pump" ? I noticed fresh yellow antitamper markings on the Delivery valves and Alda, assuming maybe "Injection Pump". |
