What does this wire go to ? '82 300D

Nice to see things with a different light on things.

This popped up to the fender side of the oil filter canister and the motor side of the steering link.

Its currently a black wire with the white end that now goes nowhere.

Any suggestions ?

Almost looks like an antennae wire but it's hard to tell.

The wire is coming from the cabin into the motor area.

If you are referring to the 2 black "items" in the middle of the picture. The one on the left looks like the oil line that goes to the back of the oil pressure gauge. The one on the right looks like the speedometer cable. The thing coming through the firewall that is chopped off? Hard to tell. Not sure and cant go look since I sold my car.

Maybe this will help ... the wire now has a red box around it.

Its an electrical line of some kind.

You know... Pulling the drivers lower kick panel and researching where the wire goes inside the car would probably be a better plan than playing guessing games.

Where that wire comes through the fire wall does not look like something MB would do. That would be a rubber grommet of some sort.

Perhaps someone was doing some sort of aftermarket cruise, stereo, etc...

Is it the lead for the brake pad wear indicator?

EDIT: sorry missed that it was through the firewall, disregard the above.

From the pic it looks like it might be a co-ax wire. Black sheath, white/clear plastic core? If so, it's for RF frequencies and the only thing likely would have been a radio install or possible a cell phone. I can't think of anything else that 1982 era-ish installed there.

I checked some pics I had of my '83 300CD and my favorite reference for pics of all things wiring or dash related in the W123: PeachPartsWiki: Replacing the A/C Evaporator

I didn't see anything on the interior that looked like it would go through in about that location. It appears to be approximately at the gas pedal, but it shouldn't be for the kickdown switch.

Pull up your carpet and take a look. Assuming it's co-ax, I'd bet a cell phone wire from an old install.

Yak you were the closest. Got out there and started digging. The wire is part of an aftermarket alarm system that has been mostly removed.

The wire is one of the few things left. Sorry for the false alarm.

You're lucky that's all there was. Here's the rats nest of aftermarket alarm wire I pulled out of mine...
