faulty lamp indicated, 98E300TD
I have been chasing a faulty lamp notice for some time. Turn on the running lights with car off gives me nothing. With the car running I have a lamp out. For the life of me I don't know where it is because everything is working. Is there some place that tells me which lamp the computer thinks is out?

Speaking only for older W210 and W124 cars, the lamp-fail module does not say which lamp is out. Often the "bad lamp" is merely one with corrosion on its socket. Cleaning all of the contacts with metal polish is a lot of work but that's what it may take. Be careful using either sandpaper or steel wool: some of the contacts are plated. You can scrub the plating off if you overdo it.
Another possible problem is that a bulb is the wrong one for the socket it's in. Mercedes designed the lamp-fail module to expect each lamp to draw a certain amount of current This causes a voltage drop in a resistor in the module and the voltage drop is sensed by a semiconductor device. Too little (or too much?) current causes an error signal and illuminates the warning that you are seeing. So there may be no easy fix. If a lamp has burned out, no problem. Otherwise you have to work through the lamps and their sockets one by one until you find the bad one. Jeremy

Bought the car with no front running lamps. Found one for $9 another for $20! The look the same for the most part but the $20 Napa bulb I was told has some sort of focus tip to it. Hate to drop another 20 to see if that is it.

The license plate lights are what kept mine on. I didn't realize they were on the same lamp out warning circuit until someone on this forum pointed it out to me.

I second the license plate bulbs! .... I had the same issue and that's what it was. Unfortunately, on the W210 they are a little bit of a hasstle to replace. Good Luck.
