Fuel Tank Drain?

On my 1983 300D I noticed something hanging off the bottom rear of the fuel tank. Upon closer look it seems to be a piece of rubber, a flap almost or is now that it is coming apart. Is this a cover for a fuel tank drain or something more serious that needs to be addressed? Any help is appreciated!

Are you sure that you are not looking at the spare tire well? Either way, a fuel tank drain was not part of the original configuration.

There is a piece of rubber covering, may be 3" x 4" on the w126 to cover the feed and the return lines at the bottom of the tank. I would expect it is the same for the w123. It only serves cosmetic purposes and can do without. Just go under the car and take a look.

hard to imagine the "rear" of the fuel tank on a 300D...

Yup, my mistake! Never even gave it a thought that it was the spare tire well! Glad I was wrong!
