1995 E300 rearend accident

So my wife called me earlier tonight telling me she was rear-ended in the E300 we just got her about a month ago. She loves the car, as do I, and we intend to keep it for awhile.

I work/live out of state during the week so I haven't been able to see her or the car as of yet. She said the taillight was broken and the rear bumper had damage, but I don't know much else about the car's condition. I overheard the other driver while I was on the phone with her explaining that he was going between 35-40 mph (in a 30 zone going uphill, mind you), passed a car who was turning left, on the right side (legal where we live) and didn't see my wife who was also trying to turn left immediately after the car he had passed. He was also driving either a Suburban or Tahoe from my wife's description.

So me being myself, I'm trying to figure out what things need to be fixed and how to get the car safely back on the road. His insurance is definitely going to pay for everything, and if not we are prepared to take things further.

What kind of damage can expect on a car of this era? How hard are parts to find? Any firsthand experience on rear-end collisions? I just got my 84 300D out of a body shop that I would trust with any of my vehicles, so it will definitely go back there. But I know second-hand parts will be used, any advice on things to make better or improve in the process?

And if anyone would, please pray for my wife. She's already had two microdiscectomies (not fun back surgery), and is already under a bit of stress (we both are actually). She's in the ER tonight with lower back pain and I haven't heard anything further than that she'd been X-rayed.

Thanks in advance. (I'll post pics once I see the car after work tomorrow)

Godspeed to your wife's recovery. My mom just experienced something similar in her 2010 Corolla.

A chiropractor can often be of use in times like this.

taho going 40... hitting a stopped vehicle from the rear is NOT going to be taillight/bumper damage... that's a LOT of mass. and ZERO crumple zone on the taho... all energy from the truck went into the MB's crumple zone. VERY expensive repair. I'd not do it. best to pick another vehicle.
keep us posted on the wife's recovery.
I've been hit from behind SEVERAL times as a young man. the MB is much more forgiving in an accident to the occupants, but still it's going to hurt!

don't give the car's condition any consideration until you know more from the hospital. it's just metal, nothing their insurance won't replace. focus on the homefront, you have my prayers!

Yes, don't worry about the car now. Spend time with the family! The forum will have plenty of ideas for the car later.

There are plenty of W124's around us with front-end damage and other ills if the car is saveable. Would be great to keep an E300. The local junk yards, Crazy Rays, etc. have loads of W124's nearly complete. Shop around the corner from me in Crownsville, MD has had 3 W124s sitting outside for parts for 3+ months now.

Sure hoping the lack of updates means all is well.
