necessity of diesel fuel additives?

Hi,

I would liek to know how necessary diesel fuel additives are, especially when temperatures are always above 20 or so. I was looking at the MSDS for the new Shell Rotella fuel additive, but it is 25-30% kerosene. The stuff, or any fuel additive is expensive, and if its that high kerosene, then perhaps its better just to buy kerosene for 1.25/gallon and put a little in every tankful.
I know this is a really cheap way to be, but I was just kind of suprised to see the first major ingreedient to be Kerosene, not something less common...
Also, has anyone tried the rotella fuel additive? Any comments? I know they have it at the local Wal-Mart...
Thanks

JMH

Don't worry about being cheap , you will fit in with the rest of us. Are you using # 1 diesel ?

My personal feeling is that these additives are cheap good preventive measures or even necessary in some cases (bad quality fuel). They do a host of things:

1. Displace water in fuel.
2. Adds lubricity to injectors due to the low sulfur fuel.
3. Cleans system to some degree.
4. Increase cetane (some do).

A single dose of Power Service additive (32 oz for 100 gal) will make #2 diesel to between #2 and Premium diesel, according to PS.

I use PS (white stuff) on every tankful (6 - 8 oz per fill up). Each fill up costs about $0.70. I notice much less smoke (almost none) on start up, smoother idle, and more power when engine is cold.

I did not use this stuff in the first couple tanks of fuel and then started using in the third tank. It made all the difference after a few applications. I even e-mailed PS telling them and they sent me a baseball cap, with their logo on it, of course. Now I wear it when I crawl under the car.
