Manual shut off valve not working - OM606
The other day the vacuum line to my shut off valve worked loose while driving the 95 E300 and when I got home the engine would not shut off. Not knowing what was going on and it being late and dark I figured I would shut it off manually and look at it in the morning. I opened the hood, screwed the shut off valve on top of the fuel filter all the way down, and it just kept running. A few minutes of flashlight work found and fixed the loose vacuum line so disaster was averted but I am a bit worried about not being able to shut the engine off if I have to.
Does anyone have experience with this? Searching the forum yielded a number of stories about leaking shut off valves and mine doesn't leak at all.

How long did you leave the valve closed?

I never considered that an engine shut off valve. Its just a fuel shut off valve. There's probably a lot of fuel in the system even after you close the fuel valve.

I probably left it closed for a couple of minutes while I was searching for the vacuum leak. I'm used to the shutoff lever on my '82 that shuts the engine down immediately. How long does the fuel shutoff normally take to kill the engine?

I just changed that lovely $140 bolt! looking at how that valve/ bolt operate, i'm thinking until the large fuel filter(s) are empty. Which might take a long while.... just guessing here

My valve was stuck open and wouldn't close at all, so I replaced it. To date, it is the most expensive bolt I have ever had to purchase.
I tested the new one - after closing it completely the car ran fine for about 15seconds, after which it began to spatter and shake around for another 45seconds. It was all over after a minute or so. I then opened it up again, turned the key and bang it started right up and didn't hesitate at all. Still trying to get over the cost of the bolt!

Diesels don't use a lot of fuel at idle. Shutting off the fuel supply will take a while to kill the engine

takes a good 2 to 3 minutes to kill the engine with that stop bolt.

Stop-valve bolt won't stop engine
My '95 E300D was missing that bolt (had a "regular" bolt like other MB diesels have for their secondary filter) when I got it. I installed one of those expensive shut-off valves and had the same results as others -- it does not stop the engine. I ran it for several minutes. After reading this thread, I'll try again and put a clock on it.
