Turn signals on 81 300d not working, fuse is good.
Hey, all! I've got a problem on my 81 300d that has me perplexed. The signal lights have quit working completely. I figured it was a blown fuse, since I've been having trouble with my left side window switch (although it's new(er), the darn thing keeps coming apart), thereby blowing its own fuse when the rocker switch allows the brass contacts to move into contact. So I opened up the fuse box, ready to find a bad fuse for the turn signals, but it wasn't blown. It looked a little thin, so I replaced it with a new one anyway, but still no luck. All the other things that run off that fuse (can't remember what right now) still seem to work, but the signal lights are not doing their thing on the dashboard or the actual lights themselves. Does anybody happen to know if there is a relay or inline fuse on these? Or, has anyone had this problem and know where to start the troubleshooting? Thanks for any and all ideas or comments. Lee

Have you replaced both fuse 12 and fuse 2?

Unplug the hazard switch under the center console. Take a loop of wire and short out terminals #49 and #30 on the plug. If that restores them you will need to strip and clean the flasher switch. The plastic cover on the hazard switch can be sprung open and the contacts and springs removed for cleaning - take careful note of how parts are assembled or you will be left with a Chinese puzzle!!
Remove the plugs at both the switch and the flasher unit and clean the pins and sockets on the plugs. Flasher unit is under the ash try in front of the shift lever. If the emergency flashers are working it is unlikely to be a fault with the flasher. Failing that you must check out the switch on the column.

Far and away the most common problem with turn signals is the hazard flasher switch as it serves as a toggle point for both.

I'm guessing the stalk has gone bad. I'd trying finding a junkyard specimen and changing them out. Or try jiggling your current one with the the signals on and see if you can make it work. Could also be a bad ground behind the cluster.

OK, this is kind of weird, but when I got in the car, the rocker switches for the left front and rear looked out of whack again (the main problem there is that the "new" plastic chrome trim doesn't want to stay attached to the switch housing, so when I try to raise or lower the left windows, the trim seperates from the switch housing, and the switch guts fall apart), so I took it out and reworked it AGAIN, and next time I tried the signal lights worked! So, it's either something that was not making a connection due to that switch being jumbled, or pulling on the wire to get them out from under the console pulled the right wire on the hazard switch. Anyway, it is working now- for a while. I'm guessing after the comments about the hazard switch wiring, I might have a loose connection on the bottom of that housing. Any other thoughts on this problem? Thanks!

Take the connector loose from the back of the hazard switch and take the switch out of the car. With average care it can be disassembled. Use contact cleaner and a pencil eraser to clean all the years of gunk out of the switch and shine up the contacts. Reassemble and see if that doesn't cure the problem.
While your in there, do the same for all your window switches and save yourself some aggrevation down the road. Good luck!

If I move around the button on the 4-way emergency switch a bit, they start functioning again, at times for a very short time, other times for long. However, I tried shorting out terminals #49a and #30 (and then again plugging in the switch) and what I get is that both the turn signals and 4-way emergency lights, when activated, go on but do not blink any longer while 49 and 30 are shorted. I tried to take apart the emergency switch to clean it and went as far as opening it (in two halves) but when trying to lift the inner cover to access the pins, it offers a lot of resistance as if it is firmly attached to something inside and am afraid to force it open...wouldn't want to break something. Would much welcome some advice in this regard. Thanks...

Just turn the emergency switch on and off about 20 times and all will be well for a few more years. BTDT

Thanks so very much Paul! I'll give it a try tonight and really hope you're right. This would be an incredibly easy solution to what appeared to be a pretty scary issue! (at least to me).. I'll report results later.

Spare window, hazard, defrost, sunroof ect are available at most pnp's for 2 to 4 bucks...
A full new set of fuses with a a fuse terminal cleaning is a super place to start when electrical issues pop up. Copper/brass fuse elements only. NO aluminum ones.
