Coat the cylinders with Crisco, put it back together and change the oil after you've run it long enough to get the oil hot.

there really should not be any play. you need to investigate and see if it is in the rod pins or the crank pully. Nothing good from play can I imagine if it is manifested at the piston.

Try this.
Turn the crank and catch a piston moving down. Stop turning and push down on the piston. If you can move it downward by hand you've got a rod bearing or wrist pin problem. Try each piston with the same experiment. Are you referring to side-to-side play of the piston?
