Exhaust leak cause idle issues?
I have a 1979 240d that i'm trying to work all the bugs out on. Just curious, could an audible exhaust leak at the manifold/flange cause a rough idle? I know it seems abstract, and I should fix these leaks anyway, but I'm not sure how sensitive diesels are to exhaust back pressure issues.. and I just want to know.

The 240 engine would probably run w/o the manifolds, it would be smokey and noisey, and a health hazard to you.
Would be a good idea to replace the manifold gasket, about $10 for a new one. X2 that back pressure is not an issue for a Diesel to run. look at all the Ford PowerStrokes, and Dodge Cummins that are running straight pipe. However, the volicity and volumn of exhaust out the 240 tail pipe, gives it that extra boost you need to get them going. Charlie

I'd look else where for idle issues. Start with fresh fuel and air filters, valve adjustment, a couple cans of diesel purge, and make sure your idle is set high enough. If that doesn't help you'll want to pursue motor mounts, injector pop pressures and spray patterns, and compression.
