Not to rain on his parade, but I'd be very surprised if he get 22k for the car. At the height of the biodiesel, diesel car craze a few years ago, he might have been able to get it. Right now he might see 15k out of it, but 22 is shooting for the moon.

Actually , i disagree with the 15k . He turned down an offer that was more than that a few days ago..... If you find a low mileage like his in that condition or better for 15k or less, please let me know .

There are a number of reasons that you would not fetch $22K+. I only look at a few pictures so take my opinions with a great grain of salt.

1) The car does not look like it did 28K. The ODO digits do not look right to me, especially the 2xxxx digit.
2) All rubbers will be brittle and need replacing for a 27 years old car.
3) The word 'DIESEL' on the gas cap should be pristine with a 28K miles car.
4) I hope the battery is not from new.
5) If I had $22K, I would buy a modem car like a VW TDI. It probably will last as long as the 300SD if the clock starts from now. It would have all modern mod-con and safety features.

In a nut-shell, only a nut would spend that kind of money.

My $0.02.

What's the story with the car then? Why so few miles?

Is the car dusty or are there stone chips all over the front by the grill?

I'm really getting a kick out of this..... I have seen the service documents to the car and the mileage is accurate , besides the dealership where it was purchased, serviced and also happens to be the owners former place of employment is still in business so they would have records there also. I'm sure to the right person, they would be able to work out a price. With regards to the comment that only a nut would pay that kind of $$, remember there are a lot of nuts out there including you and me (most of our wives think we are probably because of how much time we dedicate to our cars) . So he may not have a problem getting his asking price after all ....Just because it doesnt fit in your budget doesnt make it 'nutty' .Remember, it's all relative, some people are okay spending over $1million on a single car , and to most of us that's impossible.

the car was dusty (i dont remember seeing stone chips, and that was why i also took up close pictures of the bumper). I brought the dust issue to his attenntion, but his response was that a serious buyer wouldn't seee that as an issue .

bollocks!

any SERIOUS buyer would want you to have cleaned and detailed any and all places on the car for that money.
nobody in their right mind would buy a 27+ year old car that is then going to need a full on detailing and car wash!

come on!
I've seen these low miles SD's sell for this kind of money, but only after EVERY SINGLE issue on the car is attended to.
I mean everything. all rubber, all axles, all vacuum lines, all carpeting, all door seals etc.

What did you expect? Ooohs and aaahhhs and sighs of adoration from the poor huddled massses? You picked the wrong place for that.

Someone who knows these cars will be wondering how the miles were done. If the owner drove the car 50 miles, one day per week, then it sat the rest of the time, that's okay (not ideal, but okay). If the owner putted around town four miles each day for most of the car's life... I wouldn't touch that motor with a bargepole.

People who work at the dealers sometimes get their hands on one-in-a-thousand trades (the little old lady or grandpa specials) from time to time either through trades or in estate disposals, then flog them at huge prices to see if anyone bites. The target price is generally pulled out of someone's butt.

It's nice and it should fetch a good price but frankly it's in comparable shape to my '85 300d when I purchased it with 95k miles. And I paid about 1/6 of the ticket mentioned here (including transport and customs costs from NJ to Canada), 18 months ago.

Good luck with the "bigger fool" routine. It certainly works in real estate.

I gotta say it's a nice example.
I was surprised to see the 16 hole wheels. I thought that started in 86, but I see from the hood release latch it's a late 85, so I suppose it's possible.
anyway, I also think this car has been repainted. and there is rust in MANY places on the car.
it's ALL minor except the bubbling on the lower frame rails.
if I wanted 22K for the car I'd address ALL the rust points, and soon.
also the front end suspension looks to have been welded on. lots of beads that are not present on my 126's.

Why doesn't your "friend" list it on EBay? Then he may find the nut he's looking for.

I'm pretty sure that nut does not frequent this forum.

Why would i expect 'ooh ahhs' etc. the only reason i felt the need to comment was because of what was said about the mileage being more than what was stated...Basically i cant understand how someone can be an original owner of a car , have all his service records (plus the original sticker ) that proves the accuracy of the mileage , but then you have someone else who has never seen the car claim that the mileage is inaccurate ...that's what i was commenting about. he can ask whatever he wants, and you can make whatever comments you want to, but to say the mileage is inaccurate without any proof is what i felt the need to comment on. Its obvious, you read my post interpreted it in a way to let it be about your car etc.
