dipstick volume

Hi,

Here is an odd question: I have an 83 300D. On the dipstick, does anyone know what the volume of oil in the engine is when the oil registers at the high notch and at the low notch?
Someone once told me that on most all auto engines, the difference between min and max is 1 quart, and it is designed that way. I dont know how true this is, so Id like to know.
It is more important in this car because Im trying to measure oil consumption, and if I can eyeball it on a dipstick after being parked on flat ground overnight, it would be really easy and a nice way to do it quick.
Thanks for your help,

JMH

Sorry guys. I had forgotten about this one. I just looked up the TSB. Unfortunately, it is not really clear about the oil volume at the "min" mark.

There are 2 versions of dipsticks (referring to 617 engines).

The first version has a white handle. The oil volume at the "max" mark is 7.9 us quarts. The "min" mark is 22mm below the "max" mark. It is not clear what is the oil volume at the "min" mark, but I would suspect the difference is at least 1.5 quarts, possibly closer to 2 quarts.

The second version (from April 84) has a brown handle. The oil volume at the "max" mark is 8.5 quarts. The "max" mark is now 28mm above the "min" mark. The "min" mark is at the same place as before, however, it is not clear to me from looking at the TSB what the "min" volume is. I suspect the difference from "max" to "min" is now at least 2 quarts.

The old version is NLA. I personally feel it might be better to stay with the old version simply because there is less likelyhood of overfilling. (8.0 quarts with a filter change definitelyputs it over the "max" mark on mine").

Owner's manual inside back cover for a 1984 300SD (CA) states differential between upper and lower mark to be 1.5liters/1.6 US qt. Haynes (check previous reply in other posts) states 1 qt. Your block and pan is essentially the same (although dipstick may be different), so I'd use 1.6 qt. unless shown different. I could be wrong . Take care.

Yep, I would believe 1.6 for the old style, that would figure out to about 2.4 for the new style.

(28-22)/22 X 1.6 =~.44
1.6+.44=2.04 qts. not 2.4
Alternate way to figure it. One more to ponder. Take care.

I just added the difference between 8.5 and 7.9, which was .6, to the 1.6 and got 2.4. Frankly, 2.4 seems a bit excessive. About 2.0 would be more reasonable. Wish the TSB gave the "min" volume in plain English.
