New member 1987 W124 sunroof problem

Hello, Im new to this site & I own a 1987 300D and my sunroof stopped opening all the way. It vents up just fine but when I try to slide it back it only goes about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way open and then seems to bind on something and doesn't want to go any further.

Any guidance would be much appreciated. thanks in advance

It is either just stuck through lack of use or due to a broken piece of the mechanism. Can you open it by using the manual winding function on the motor unit?
The mechanism is supposed to be greased annually, and over time the cable's grease coating can dry up too.

Does it make any funny noises? The cables strip out on these regularly. You should be able to check them at the drive motor in the trunk.

I forgot to mention that it appears to be scratching the top of my sunroof somewhere under the top. Ive owned this car for about a year and it has been like this for about 2 months one time it did not want to close and I had to close it via rear hand crank. It doesnt seem to make any weird sounds though, it just seems to bind up on something and it starts to shift to one side and stops.

The thing I find "faulty" about the entire mechanism is that the 2 "rails/mechanisms are independent of each other. So when something binds on one side the central pushing force causes the assembly to cock to one side... further actuation of the motor causes one or both tilt mechanisms to "bend" and/or break further exacerbating the issue. Which usually just starts as a simple dirt/grease issue.

I think the sunroof mechanism should have been designed similar to the electric seat mechanism... gear driven AT the rails.

OR... they could just have used sturdier materials for the tilt mechanism. Right now its just pot metal... easy to bend/break with minimum effort.
