The edge of the socket will have a chamford (sp) edge. slopes in, and the edge of the tank screen is short and the socket can slip. works ok with the fuel sending unit.

I was trying to remove a tank screen off a 79 280CE on Wed. I never did get it off, the socket kept slipping. Iam headed down to a maching shop and have the socket cut in 1/2 and then have a square edge.

A spark plug socket will also work on the tank strainer.

Here is a post where Luckyeddie cut down his 46mm socket.

Thanks.

Always helps to have all the necessary info for a diagnosis............damn near impossible to get on here lately.

Can't remember if it was in my original thread, but set it to the right size, stand it upright on the hex and then put a 3/8 long extension through the hole at the top of the handle for leverage.

Hey Kerry. Yup just did that and it seriously wont budge. The wrench feels like its going to fall apart if I add anymore pressure to it. Here's a dumb question... righty tighty lefty loosey applies here correct?

The wagon tank screen has an internal hex. I didn't have an allen key big enough so I used a coupling nut from the hardware store. It was sloppy, but good enough -- the thing isn't in there that tightly, although the rubber O-ring may have bonded a bit with the metal.

I got it out! Woo hoo! THe pb blaster and hammering it to oblivion worked. It still looks like there's lots of fuel left in the car. Can I run the car without the fuel sender or is there a danger in that? If not, I will clean it and reinsert it.

How long an extension do you have thru the hole in the wrench. My recollection is that it took a fair amount of force, but once it broke free it unthreaded easily.

<> nevermind, since it's out now.

I think you guys are talking about different operations right now. digi is trying to remove the sender, so he needs the bigger wrench.

Later on he'll try to take out the screen.

Not to suggest any more tools, but Northern Tool sells 3/4 drive 46mm sockets relatively cheap. The outside diameter is 62 mm, so it ought to fit except in the tightest recess. The chamfer on the inner edge is 1, maybe 1.5 mm. You could get the socket, get the 3/4 to 1/2 adapter and then use an 18" 1/2 drive breaker bar.

I don't know if I'd use a hammer while trying to break the sender loose. An accurate reading is nice, but it's not critical for driving the car.

You're probably fighting a bonded rubber O-ring. If it tears, are you ready with a replacement?

If the sender is that much trouble, you may be better served going back to the strainer and accepting the unknown level of fuel to drain out. After 400 miles on one tank, there shouldn't that much left in there.

I'd recommend cleaning first. It's a basic task. Be careful with the wires. Refer to the other threads about disassembly. Army's possibly has the best pics of the bottom nut.

Here's a picture of the sender. Is the bottom suppose to be bent like that?

No. Something strange happened there.

Run it without the sender and pump the tank dry with the return line.
