95 E300 Engine noise

95 E300D has picked up a noise, and I've been searching noise threads to no avail.

Its a whirring noise, intermittant, coming from either the engine or trans, that follows engine rpm.

Its more noticeable in the car than with the hood up hanging over the engine.

I've checked the usual suspects with a mechanic's stethoscope.. serpentine belt tensioner, shock, bearing, etc. but no go. And as I said, its intermittant.

I haven't tried it up on a lift yet, and that will be the next step.

Any "been there, done thats" would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Mark

Have you checked all the engine accessories? How many miles on the car? I had a whine only noticeable in the car above 2000rpm that turned out to be a failing vacuum pump. Now I've got a whiny rear end instead... I'm on my second noisy diff now, quite common on these cars.

Drop the tension on the serpentine belt and fire it up for a couple of minutes. No WP so don't run it too long.

No noise = bad accessory device.
Noise = Look elsewhere.

I was getting a smililar noise at the tensioner pulley, it would come and go and follow engine RPM, but it almost sounded as if it was coming from somewhere else. The pulley was hardly moving when I pulled the tensioner off and replaced everything, I ended up replacing the belt and tensioner shock while I was in there, no more noise.
